Liberty runs its record to 6-1 in Big South conference play and 18-5 overall. Presbyterian drops to 1-9 in its first year of conference action and 4-17 overall. With the triumph, the Flames have won 11 of 12 games at home this season.
Locked in a pitcher's duel throughout the contest, Swanson (Jr., Buford, Ga.) allowed one run on five hits in eight innings of work to remain unbeaten on the season with a 4-0 record. The right-hander struck out eight batters and walked one. After yielding Presbyterian its lone run of the contest, Swanson combined with reliever Carter Browning (Jr., Ada, Okla.), who recorded his second save of the year, to retire the last 13 Blue Hose batters.
After both starting pitchers, Presbyterian's Jesse Harman and Swanson, kept the two teams off the scoreboard by stranding runners in scoring position throughout the first 3 1/3 innings, the Flames got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. Right fielder Doug Bream (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.) led off the frame with a single up the middle and moved to second base on a single by left fielder Jeff Jefferson (So., Danville, Va.). Both base runners moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Errol Hollinger (Sr., Upland, Calif.). Third baseman Tyler Bream (Fr., Zelienople, Pa.) followed by lining a single to center field, plating both runners for a 2-0 Liberty advantage.
In the top of the fifth, the Blue Hose pushed across their lone run of the contest. Right fielder Gabe Grammer doubled off the right field wall with one out. Two batters later, left fielder Mack Hite singled sharply to center field, chasing home Grammer to trim the Flames' advantage to the final 2-1 score.
Presbyterian's Harmon went the distance on the mound, falling to 2-2 on the season. He gave up two runs on seven hits, striking out four Flames batters.
Doug Bream and Jefferson each had two of Liberty's seven hits in the contest, all singles. No Presbyterian batter had more than one hit in the contest. The Blue Hose totaled five hits in the game.
Presbyterian and Liberty will meet in the final game of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch at Worthington Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
