Liberty runs its record to 7-1 in Big South Conference play and 19-5 overall. Presbyterian falls to 1-10 in conference action and 4-18 overall. Currently on a season-high nine game winning streak, the Flames run their home mark to 12-1 on the year. Taking the first two games of the series by identical 2-1 scores, Liberty sweeps its first-ever meetings with the Blue Hose.
Presbyterian jumped to an early advantage with runs in its first at bat. Designated hitter Jesse Harmon tripled off the left field wall to open the contest and scored on an infield hit by left fielder Mack Hite for a quick 1-0 lead. After Hite was picked off for the first out of the inning, center fielder Cory Lyda lined his second home run of the year for an early 2-0 advantage.
Liberty countered in the home half of the first inning with a run. Shortstop Matt Williams (Fr., Franklin, Tenn.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the stanza and moved to second base on a fielding error by Presbyterian shortstop Andrew Williams on a Curran Redal (Jr., CF, Moses Lake, Wash.) grounder. Right fielder Doug Bream (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.) followed with a RBI grounder to make it, 2-1 Blue Hose after one inning.
The Flames took the lead with a two-out uprising in the third. Redal began the burst with a double down the line. After moving to third on a wild pitch, the Liberty center fielder tied the game on an infield single by Doug Bream. Left fielder Jeff Jefferson (So., Danvillle, Pa.) then reached on an infield single and catcher Errol Hollinger (Sr., Upland, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Third baseman Tyler Bream (Fr., Zelienople, Pa.) followed with his first collegiate grand slam and third home run of the year, a liner over the left field wall, to put Liberty in front, 6-2.
Presbyterian came back with a run in the top of the fourth to trim the Flames' advantage to 6-3. With two outs, catcher Tony Micklon doubled into the left center field gap, and scored on a single by second baseman Zac Rhinesmith.
In the top of the fifth, the Blue Hose benefitted from a Liberty error to slice the Liberty lead to 6-4. Right fielder Gabe Grammer reached on an error by Flames third baseman Tyler Bream and moved to third on a single by Harmon. Two batters later, Grammer came home with Presbyterian's fourth run of the contest on a fielder's choice grounder by Lyda.
In the bottom of the inning, the Flames used three home runs to extend their advantage. Redal and Doug Bream led off the Liberty half of the fifth with back-to-back home runs. Redal's round tripper was his fourth of the season, while Bream's was his fifth of the year. It is the second time this season, the Flames have hit back-to-back home runs in a contest. Hollinger and outfielder Casy Brown (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif.) connected for back-to-back four baggers in the fifth inning of an 11-1 victory over Temple on March 7.
Later in the inning with two runners on base, first baseman Trey Wimmer (Fr., Greenwood, S.C.) belted his fourth home run of the year, giving Liberty an 11-4 lead.
Hollinger upped the Flames' advantage with a two-run home run over the left field wall in the sixth. After Jefferson doubled with two out, the Liberty catcher connected for his seventh home run of the year.
Presbyterian plated three runs in the eighth inning. Lyda opened the frame with his second home run of the game and third of the season. Later in the inning, Andrew Williams singled with the bases loaded to make it, 13-7 Flames.
In the bottom of the stanza, Liberty added a run on a RBI ground out by Nate Thompson (Jr., C, Stoneville, N.C.) for the final score of 14-7.
