With the sweep, Liberty moves to 4-1 in Big South play and 15-5 overall. High Point falls to 1-6 in Big South action and 5-13 overall. The Flames have won five-straight contests and 12 out of their last 14.
With a run-scoring single in seventh inning, Bream (Fr., Zelienople, Pa.) tied the Liberty record for RBIs in a game with nine. The freshman third baseman's nine RBIs tied the school mark set by former Flame standout Pat Sipe, who recorded nine RBIs in a 13-2 win over Richmond on April 19, 1986, at Worthington Stadium.
Liberty jumped onto the Coy Willard Stadium scoreboard in the opening inning. Shortstop Matt Williams (Fr., Franklin, Tenn.) and center fielder Curran Redal (Jr., Moses Lake, Wash.) each were hit by a pitch to begin the Flames' first. Two batters later with runners on second and third base, third baseman Bream lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, which Panther left fielder Hank Patterson dropped for an error. Williams scored to give the Flames a 1-0 advantage.
Left fielder Joseph Feeley (So., Chesapeake City, Md.) followed with a single past the third base bag, plating Redal for the second Liberty run of the frame. The next batter, catcher Errol Hollinger (Sr., Upland, Calif.), ripped a single down the left line, scoring Bream for a 3-0 Flames lead.
Host High Point countered in the bottom of the first frame, cutting the early Liberty edge to one run. Center fielder Spencer Andrews beat out a chopper in front of home plate for an infield single to lead off the home half of the opening frame. Shortstop Alfie Wheeler walked and second baseman Jeff Cowan was hit by a pitch to load the bases with Panthers with no one out. Andrews plated the first High Point run of the contest, as the next batter, first baseman Kyle Mahoney, grounded into a double play. Wheeler then scored on wild pitch, trimming the Liberty edge to 3-2 after one inning.
The Flames struck for three more runs in the second inning, batting around for the second consecutive frame. Williams walked to open the frame and moved to third on a single up the middle by Redal. Right fielder Doug Bream (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.) followed by lining a double into the right field corner to chase home Williams with the first Liberty run of the inning. Redal made it, 5-3 Flames, scoring on the next batter, Tyler Bream's sacrifice fly. Hollinger followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Doug Bream, and give Liberty a 6-3 advantage.
In the top of the third stanza, the Flames used two home runs, their first two of the three-game series, to up their lead to 10-3. Williams and Redal lead off the inning with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Tyler Bream blasted his second home run of the season over the 370 foot sign in left center field for a 9-3 Liberty edge. After a fly out for the second out of the inning, Hollinger connected for his sixth home run of the year, over the left center field fence, giving the Flames a 10-3 lead.
High Point pushed two runs across in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Mahoney singled and moved to second base on a walk to designated hitter Max Fulginiti. Catcher Billy Alvino followed with a run-scoring single for the first Panther run of the third. Patterson followed by lifting a sacrifice fly to center to cut the Flames advantage to six, 10-4.
In the fourth inning, Liberty scored five more runs, batting around for the third time on the afternoon. With bases loaded and two outs, Tyler Bream lined a bases-clearing double off the left field wall to make it, 13-4 Flames. Feeley followed with a single to plate Bream with the frame's fourth run. Two batters later, first baseman Trey Wimmer (Fr., Greenwood, S.C.) provided a run-scoring single to make it, 15-4 Liberty.
The Panthers broke through for a run in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out single by Fulginiti.
The Flames scored four more runs in the seventh, including Tyler Bream tying the Liberty record for RBIs in game. Doug Bream opened the scoring with a RBI double, followed Tyler Bream driving in his record-tying ninth run in the contest. Later in the frame, pinch hitter Nathan Thompson (Fr., Stoneville, N.C.) plated a run with a RBI infield single and Tyler Bream scored on a throwing error by High Point shortstop Wheeler for the final score of 19-5.
Liberty left-hander Shawn Teufel (Jr., Tequesta, Fla.) was the beneficiary of the Flames' scoring spree, running his season record to 2-1 on the year. The junior allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings of work.
Panther left-hander Brian Jones takes the loss to drop to 0-4 on the season. He was chased after a 1/3 of an inning, giving up three runs on two hits.
Tyler Bream went 3-for-4 with four runs scored to go along with his nine RBIs for the Flames. Teammate Hollinger went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Hank Patterson and third baseman Eric Marion had two hits each for High Point.
Liberty travels to Raleigh, N.C., Wednesday, for a non-conference contest with the N.C. State Wolfpack. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
