Former collegiate volleyball standout Mackenzie Martin has joined the Liberty Volleyball staff as an assistant coach, announced by first-year Head Coach Jeremy White.
"I couldn't be more excited to bring Mackenzie into the fold," White said. "She comes highly recommended from some of the biggest names in our sport and her awesome energy and passion for our sport will be a shining example for our current and future athletes to follow. It's that energy that will make her one of the best young recruiting coordinators in the country. On top of that, she brings a high level of playing experience from her five seasons between Tulane and The Citadel. Go Flames!!"
Martin joins the Lady Flames after finishing up her playing career at The Citadel, where she played for two seasons. She played at Tulane for three seasons before transferring to The Citadel.
"I am incredibly grateful and excited to join Coach White and Coach Wills at Liberty!" Martin said. "It's a true privilege to be part of a program that combines elite volleyball with a deep commitment to faith. I look forward to growing alongside these outstanding athletes and learning from these two incredible coaches. I'm eager to be in Lynchburg and get to work this spring!"
An outside hitter from Port Orange, Fla., Martin finished her collegiate playing career with 1,004 kills, 1,318 digs, 82 aces and 90 blocks between her time at Tulane (2020-22) and The Citadel (2023-24). Martin showed strong leadership throughout her playing career, being named team captain at both Tulane (2022) and The Citadel (2024).
Martin holds the program single-match record for digs at both Tulane and The Citadel. She collected a program-record 42 digs at Chattanooga on Oct. 11, 2024. Her 41 digs against SMU on Oct. 17, 2021 are Tulane's single-match program record. She scored a career-high 29 kills on Aug. 27, 2022 at Lamar.
She helped The Citadel to a program-record 27-4 record during the 2023 season, including a SoCon regular-season title and a berth in the NIVC. As a senior in 2024, Martin totaled single-season career highs in kills (283), aces (32), digs (420) and blocks (24).
Martin has received coaching experience during her time as a collegiate student-athlete. In July 2023, she served as a clinician at the College of Charleston volleyball camps. Most recently, she was head coach for the Apex Volleyball Club 13-1 team beginning in July 2024. Martin helped guide the team through development of fundamentals while also coaching in eight weekend tournaments.
During the spring 2024 and fall 2024 semesters, Martin served as an athletic academic advisor at The Citadel. She provided comprehensive academic advising for the men's and women's rifle teams and women's golf team.
She graduated from Tulane in 2023 with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology. While at Tulane, she served as a member of Athletes in Action and on SAAC. Martin is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in social science at The Citadel.
