Home Opener vs. Duke Headlines Liberty WBB’s Non-Conference Slate

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty has completed its 2024-25 women's basketball schedule with the announcement of 11 non-conference contests. The Lady Flames will welcome Duke to Liberty Arena on Nov. 7 for their home opener, headlining a challenging slate of matchups.
After beginning the season with a Nov. 4 game against Valparaiso in Xenia, Ohio, Liberty will face three 2023-24 NCAA Tournament qualifiers (Duke, Tennessee and Cal Baptist) and eight 20-win teams from a year ago, prior to the start of CUSA competition.
Marquee Matchups
After reaching the Sweet 16 of last year's NCAA Tournament, Duke will make its second visit to Lynchburg and its first appearance at Liberty Arena. The Blue Devils previously faced the Lady Flames in the 2016-17 season opener at the Vines Center.
On Nov. 16, Liberty will head to Tennessee to face the Lady Vols for the second year in a row. It will mark the Lady Flames' first trip to Knoxville since the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Tennessee is coming off a season where it advanced to NCAA Tournament's second round.
Watch Out for the WAC
Liberty will take on the top two teams from the 2023-24 WAC standings, including regular-season and tournament champion Cal Baptist and regular-season runner-up Grand Canyon.
The Lady Flames' Nov. 9 home clash with NCAA Tournament qualifier Cal Baptist will mark the first-ever meeting between Liberty and the Lancers.
Liberty will then head to Grand Canyon the day before Thanksgiving (Nov. 27) for the Lady Flames' first visit to Arizona in program history.
Tournament Time
Liberty's lone regular-season tournament will be the Cherokee Invitational, slated for Dec. 18-19 in Cherokee, N.C. The other three tournament squads (Arkansas – WBIT, Toledo – WBIT and Troy – WNIT) all made postseason appearances a year ago.
The Cherokee Invitational will be contested as a true tournament, with the Lady Flames facing Arkansas in the Dec. 18 nightcap. The two winning teams and the two losing teams will then square off on Dec. 19.
Homecoming Contests
Two of Liberty's seniors will get to play near home during their final season of competition.
The Nov. 4 season opener will be played in Xenia, Ohio, the city where Emma Hess attended high school (Legacy Christian Academy).
Liberty's Nov. 24 visit to Towson will take place less than two hours away from Bella Smuda's hometown of Exton, Pa.
Fresh Faces
Liberty will meet Cal Baptist for the first time this season, and the Lady Flames have never faced any of their possible Cherokee Invitational opponents (Arkansas, Toledo and Troy).
Liberty has met Nov. 30 opponent Christopher Newport before, but not since Nov. 19, 1983.
