ANNAPOLIS, Md. – After building an early 21-point lead, Liberty withstood numerous comeback attempts by Duquesne to win Saturday's nightcap at the Navy Classic by a 67-60 count.
Avery Mills scored 12 of her team-high 18 points during the fourth quarter to help Liberty improve to 4-2 with its first win away from Lynchburg this year. Ify Nwaobi led all players with 13 boards, helping the Lady Flames win a battle between two of the nation's top rebounding teams, 47-40. Meanwhile, Claudia Acin (8 points, career-high 10 assists, 1 turnover) was impressive in her return to action after missing the last three contests.
Duquesne drops to 5-2 despite Alexis Bordas tallying 13 of her game-high 23 points during the final stanza. The Dukes were held more than 20 points below their season scoring average, finishing at 32.8 percent (19-of-58) from the field and 23.3 percent (7-of-30) from three-point range.
