
Barbin and Simmons Pace Flames During Day 1 of NCAA Stanford Regional

STANFORD, Calif. – Liberty's most experienced Regional players led the way for the Flames during the first day of play at the NCAA Stanford Regional on Monday.
Seniors Isaac Simmons and Austin Barbin both carded a 1-over par 71 during the first round of regional play at the Stanford Golf Course (par 70, 6,727 yards).
The pair of golfers, who are playing in their third-straight NCAA Regional, are currently tied for 36th place in the 75-man field.
Simmons made the turn at 2-under par, but dropped a shot at the par-4, No. 2 hole (483 yards) and double bogeyed the par-4, No. 5 hole (447 yards) to fall below par.
Barbin birdied the par-5, No. 7 hole (539 yards), his 16th hole of the day, to get back to level par. However, he missed the green at the par-3, No. 8 hole (172 yards) and carded his fourth bogey of the day to drop back to an over-par score.
The rest of Liberty's starting five are just one shot back of their teammates as Josh Ryan, Brett Reid and Ike Joy are tied for 44th place with a 2-over par 72.
Overall, Liberty finished the first day of the NCAA Stanford Regional tied for 10th place with a 6-over par 286.
No. 18 Illinois set the pace for the Stanford Regional, leading the 14-team field with a 17-under par 263. No. 6 Florida State, the top seed in the Regional, is three shots back of Illinois with a 13-under par 267.
Regional host and No. 27 Stanford carded an 11-under par 269 during its first trip around its home course and is in third place.
Following play on Wednesday, the top five teams from each of the six NCAA Regional sites will advance to the NCAA Men's Golf National Championship, held May 24-29 at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
Liberty is looking to advance to the national championship for the fifth time in program history (2012, 2019, 2021 and 2022). The Flames are making their 14th NCAA Regional appearance in school history and eighth-straight showing at an NCAA Regional.
The Flames will return to the course on Tuesday morning at 12:55 p.m. EST/9:55 a.m. PST to begin round two. Liberty will be sent off the No. 10 tee, along with Fresno State and Missouri.
