Lugiano Tied for 35th Place After Day 1 at NCAA Men’s Golf Championship

CARLSBAD, Calif. – Liberty's Michael Lugiano is tied for 35th place following his first round at the 2026 NCAA Men's Golf National Championship on Friday.
Lugiano signed for an even par 72 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa (par 72, 7,528 yards). The sophomore offset three bogeys on the day with three birdies and posted one of 55 rounds of par or better among the 153-man field.
Two of his three birdies on the day came on par-4 holes, allowing the Jackson Township, Pa. native to finish the day ranked tied for 15th in the field in par-4 scoring (3.90/1-under).
Lugiano quickly got into red figures during the round, posting a birdie at No. 2 (par 5, 622 yards), one of two 600-plus yard par-5 holes at the national championship venue.
He followed with back-to-back bogeys, but carded his second birdie of the day at No. 9 (par 4, 426 yards) to make the turn at even par.
A bogey at the lengthy par-3, No. 12 hole (245 yards) dropped him back into an over-par score, but Lugiano fought to get back to level par for the day with a birdie at No. 15 (par 4, 371 yards).
The round was Lugiano's 26th at par or better this season out of 36 rounds during his sophomore campaign (72.2 percent). It was also his sixth-consecutive round at par or better.
All 30 teams who have qualified for the NCAA Men's Golf National Championship, along with the six individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play, Friday through Sunday.
Following 54 holes of competition, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will advance for one additional day of stroke play on Monday.
The final round of stroke play will determine the top eight teams for match play competition and the 72-hole 2026 NCAA men's golf individual national champion.
Lugiano's second round of the 2026 NCAA Men's Golf National Championship will get underway on Saturday, starting at 11:42 a.m. ET/8:42 a.m. PT for hole No. 1o (par 5, 596 yards).
