CARLSBAD, Calif. – Liberty's Michael Lugiano saw his impressive sophomore season come to an end on Sunday with a 47th-place finish at the 2026 NCAA Men's Golf National Championship.
Lugiano finished his first experience at the national championship event by carding an even par 216 (72-71-73) at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa (par 72, 7,528 yards).
The sophomore entered the day with the goal of finishing as one of the top nine individuals not on an advancing team to play in tomorrow's final round of stroke play.
However, he missed the mark by just two strokes as the final spots in tomorrow's stroke play round when to golfers with a 2-under par 214.
Lugiano looked like he might be in position to reach the goal at the turn of Round 3. He overcame a double bogey at No. 11 (par 3, 245 yards) thanks to three birdies in his first nine holes of the day making the turn at 1-under par and inside the top 25.
The sophomore posted back-to-back bogeys at No. 2 (par 5, 622 yards) and No. 3 (par 3, 190 yards) before getting a bounce-back birdie at No. 4 (par 4, 383 yards).
Needing a birdie to reach his goal, Lugiano closed with a bogey at No. 9 (par 4, 429 yards), his final hole of the round, signing for a 1-over par 73 and at even par for the championship.
The round ends an outstanding sophomore season for Lugiano. The run included helping Liberty win its second Conference USA title and his individual victory at the NCAA Corvallis Regional.
With the win at Corvallis, Lugiano became the first Flame to individually qualify for the NCAA Men's Golf National Championship.
In total, Liberty has had representation at four of the last seven NCAA Championship events (Team: 2019, 2021 and 2022 | Individual: 2026).
Lugiano finished his sophomore season at Liberty with a 70.61 season stroke average, 14 sub-70 rounds and he played 27-of-38 rounds at par or better (71.1 percent).
Lugiano was honored for his efforts as he was named to the Conference USA Men's Golf first-team all-conference team and the PING All-Region East team.
