Ryan Captures Medalist Honors at U.S. Amateur

Liberty golf's successful run at USGA sponsored events continued on Tuesday with Josh Ryan capturing medalist honors at the 2026 U.S. Amateur.
Ryan, along with rising junior Michael Lugiano, have advanced to the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur, which starts Wednesday afternoon. Lugiano finished stroke play tied for 16th with a 1-under par 139 (71-68).
Ryan, a 2026 graduate of the program, carded an 8-under par 132 (67-65) to finish with the low score following stroke play at the 126th playing of the U.S. Amateur Championship.
His score of 132 was one shot off the U.S. Amateur lowest stroke play record of 131 set by Hayden Wood in 2017.
Ryan finished up the stroke play portion of this year's U.S. Amateur on the famed Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., on Tuesday.
The Merion Golf Club has a long and storied place in championship golf history. The 2026 U.S. Amateur is the 20th USGA championship to be hosted at Merion, and the seventh men's U.S. Amateur.
The native of Norristown, Pa., which is just over 10 miles from Merion, thrilled the hometown fans with a 5-under par 65 to conclude stroke play.
Ryan's score on Tuesday was one shot off the lowest score in a USGA event at Merion. The mark was set by Ben Crenshaw at the 1981 U.S. Open and matched by Drake Harvey during stroke play on Monday at this year's U.S. Amateur.
Liberty had a total of four players at the 2026 U.S. Amateur. Joining Ryan and Lugiano were incoming freshmen Austin Krahn and Noah Maclauchlan.
Maclauchlan qualified for the U.S. Amateur following an impressive victory at the 2026 U.S. Junior Amateur where he defeated No. 1 AJGA ranked Miles Russell, 6 and 5, in the championship match.
Tee times for both players in the Round of 64 on Wednesday will be finalized following a 16-for-11 player playoff on Wednesday morning.
Ryan will be the No. 1 seed in the Round of 64 and will tee off at 2:40 p.m., against one of the 11 players who advance from the playoff.
Lugiano is the No. 19 seed in the Round of 64 and will face off against No. 46 seed Chase Hughes from Oklahoma City, Okla., starting at 12:30 p.m.
NBC's coverage of the U.S. Amateur Round of 64 will broadcast on the Peacock streaming app, from 3 to 6 p.m.
The U.S. Amateur will continue with its Round of 32 on Thursday, quarterfinals on Friday, semifinals on Saturday and the 36-hole championship round on Sunday.
