
Hot Start Leads Lugiano into Red Figures at NCAA Men’s Golf Championship

CARLSBAD, Calif. – Liberty's Michael Lugiano birdied three of his first four holes on Saturday at the 2026 NCAA Men's Golf National Championship, moving the sophomore into a share of 33rd place.
Following 36 holes at the national championship event, Lugiano has posted a 1-under par 143 (72-71) at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa (par 72, 7,528 yards).
Opening his second round during the morning flight at the par-5, No. 10 hole (596 yards), Lugiano carded birdies at No. 10, No. 12 (par 3, 226 yards) and No. 13 (par 4, 428 yards) to quickly get into red figures.
He made the turn at 1-under par following a double bogey at No. 18 (par 5, 557 yards), his ninth hole of the day, and dropped back to level par following a bogey at No. 4 (par 4, 383 yards).
However, the sophomore strung together birdies at No. 5 (par 4, 427 yards) and No. 6 (par 5, 571 yards) before dropping his final shot of the day at No. 7 (par 4, 521 yards).
The round was Lugiano's 27th at par or better this season out of 37 rounds during his sophomore campaign (73.0 percent). It was also his seventh consecutive round at par or better.
All 30 teams who have qualified for the NCAA Men's Golf National Championship, along with the six individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play, Friday through Sunday.
Following 54 holes of competition, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will advance for one additional day of stroke play on Monday.
The final round of stroke play will determine the top eight teams for match play competition and the 72-hole 2026 NCAA men's golf individual national champion.
Lugiano's third round of the 2026 NCAA Men's Golf National Championship will get underway on Sunday, starting at 11:42 a.m. ET/8:42 a.m. PT from hole No. 10 (par 5, 596 yards).
