Lugiano Makes Quarterfinal Run at U.S. Amateur

Liberty men's golf capped its summer of success at USGA sponsored events by rising junior Michael Lugiano advancing to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Amateur.
The native of Jackson Township, Pa., posted three-straight 1 up victories during the Rounds of 64, 32 and 16, taking each match the distance on the famed Merion Golf Course in Ardmore, Pa.
Lugiano's run at the 126th playing of the U.S. Amateur Championship came to an end on Friday afternoon following a 6-and-4 loss to No. 11 seed Logan Reilly.
This was the deepest run by a Liberty men's golfer in program history at the U.S. Amateur, besting Jonathan Yaun's Round of 32 appearance at the 2020 U.S. Amateur contested at Bandon Dunes Resort, Bandon, Ore.
All in all, Liberty men's golf made its presence known at United States Golf Association events during the summer of 2026.
A month before his first event with the Flames, incoming freshman Noah Maclauchlan won the 2026 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship on July 26.
The native of Moseley, Va., defeated No. 1 AJGA ranked Miles Russell, 6 and 5, in the 36-hole finale played at the Saucon Valley Country Club's Old Course in Bethlehem, Pa.
Maclauchlan's victory allowed him to join three other Flames – Lugiano, recent graduate Josh Ryan and fellow incoming freshman Austin Krahn – at the U.S. Amateur.
Ryan, a 2026 graduate of the program, carded an 8-under par 132 (67-65) to finish with the low score following stroke play on Tuesday. This earned him stroke play medalist honors at the U.S. Amateur and the No. 1 seed heading into the match play portion of the event.
His score of 132 was one shot off the U.S. Amateur lowest stroke play record of 131 set by Hayden Wood in 2017.
Ryan's victory, along with Lugiano finishing tied for 16th in stroke play, gave Liberty a pair of golfers in the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur for the first time in program history.
The Liberty men's golf program will kick off their 2026-27 season when they travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to participate in the Visit Knoxville Collegiate. The event is hosted by Tennessee at the Fox Den Country Club, August 31 to September 1.
