4/6/2024 9:14:00 AM | Men's Golf
The Flames will play their first of three April tournaments, culminating with the CUSA Men's Golf Championship, starting next Monday just 70 miles North of campus.
Liberty will kick off a busy April schedule when they tee it up at the third annual Lewis Chitengwa Memorial, hosted by Virginia at the Birdwood Golf Course (par 71, 7,116 yards) in Charlottesville, Va.
The event, now in its third year, is named in honor of Virginia alumni golfer Lewis Chitengwa who was a two-time All-American (1995, 1996). He finished seventh at the 1996 NCAA Championships, Virginia's best finish at the NCAA Championship during the previous 50 years.
Chitengwa turned professional in 1998 and played on the Tear Drop, Buy.com and Canadian Tours in addition to competing at the PGA's St. Jude Memphis Classic. At the age of 26, he passed away as a result of meningitis. At the time, he was competing in the Canadian Tour's Edmonton Open.
In 2015, he was recognized posthumously for his immense contribution to golf by being inducted into Mercedes-Benz Southern African Golf Hall of Fame.
This year's 14-team field includes some of the best teams in the country, featuring including Florida State (No. 6), Tennessee (No. 10), Arkansas (No. 11), Virginia (No. 12), North Florida (No. 31) and Northwestern (No. 40).
Play gets underway on Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start, kicking off 36 holes of continuous play. The final round will get underway on Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. with fixed tee times going off No. 1 and No. 10 tees.
