
Ryan and Simmons Pace Flames at Valero Texas Collegiate

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Liberty's Josh Ryan and Isaac Simmons paced the Flames during their opening event of the 2023-24 season with a pair of top-20 finishes at the Valero Texas Collegiate.
Ryan was one of 15 golfers in the highly ranked 72-man field to finish in red figures on Monday. The sophomore carded a 1-under par 215 (70-71-74) to finish in a share of 14th place at the renowned TPC San Antonio Oaks Course (par 72, 7,034 yards).
Simmons followed two shots behind Ryan and finished tied for 19th place with a 1-over par 217 (73-69-75).
The course is the host of the Valero Texas Open, an annual stop on the PGA Tour. The individual medalist at this year's Valera Texas Collegiate received an exemption into the 2024 Valero Texas Open.
FGCU's Joe Sullivan (69-71-70) finished in a three-way tie for first place at 6-under par with TCU's Gustav Frimodt (70-68-72) and Baylor's Johnny Keefer (69-69-72). Sullivan won the exemption into the PGA Tour event with a birdie on the second playoff hole.
Overall, the 12-team field featured 10 teams that finished the 2022-23 season ranked inside the final top 50 national ranking.
Vanderbilt, who finished the 2022-23 season ranked No. 1 in the final polls, vaulted to the top of the leaderboard on Monday to claim the team title. The Commodores closed the third-day event with a blistering 12-under par 276 to claim the team title by five shots with an overall 8-under par 851 winning score (283-292-276).
Liberty finished its first event of the 2023-24 season in ninth place with a 16-over par 880 (293-287-300).
