JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – Liberty's Josh Ryan carded an even par round of 72 to pace the Flames during the first round of the 2023 Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. The sophomore is currently tied for 27th place.
Overall, the Flames struggled during the opening round of the 25th annual tournament. Liberty carded an 11-over par 299 during its first trip around the Blackthorn Club (par 72, 7,118 yards) and is currently in 15th place.
Furman paced the 15-team field with a 10-under par 278 and is five shots clear of tournament host ETSU and Charlotte, who posted a 5-under par 283 team score.
ETSU's Mats Ege carded a course record 10-under par 62. The redshirt senior was on a "59 watch" when he was 10-under par through 14 holes, but he closed with four straight pars.
On a day where the course played at nearly 1.5 strokes above par (73.44 scoring average), five teams and 26 players managed to post numbers in red figures.
The 15-team field will return to the Blackthorn Club tomorrow morning for round two of the ETSU hosted tournament. The Flames will be paired with fellow Conference USA member Louisiana Tech and Toledo and will be sent off the No. 10 tee starting at 9:20 a.m.
