The High Point Panthers broke up a pitchers' duel with five runs in the eighth inning en route to a 5-0 victory over the Liberty Flames on Senior Night, Friday night at the Liberty Baseball Stadium.
Liberty pitcher Victor Cole and High Point pitchers Conor Lourey and Andre Scrubb matched scoreless innings for seven frames of the Big South contest until the Panthers struck in the eighth.
Liberty drops to 15-8 in the Big South and 32-21 overall. High Point moves to 14-9 in conference play and 27-23 overall.
Lourey allowed one hit through the first 5 1/3 innings, departing in the sixth. After walking center fielder Ashton Perritt with one out in Liberty half of the inning, Lourey was replaced by Scrubb. Shortstop Dalton Britt followed with a double down the line, the only hit Scrubb allowed, to put two runners in scoring position. However, the Panthers right-hander struck out the next two batters to end the threat and preserve the scoreless duel.
Meanwhile, Cole allowed three hits through the first seven innings, retiring 11 straight from the fourth inning until the top of the eighth.
High Point shortstop Tony Fortier-Bensen broke up the string with a single and pinch hitter Spencer Angelis walked to open the inning. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, Cole departed.
With the infield playing in, designated hitter Brady Williamson reached on an extremely high chopper to the right side of the infield for the game's first run and giving the Panthers a 1-0 edge.
Second baseman Chris Clare followed with a RBI single for a 2-0 advantage. Two batters later, a two-run double by Josh Greene upped the visitors' lead to 4-0. First baseman Carson Jackson capped the inning with a RBI sacrifice fly for what proved to be the final score of 5-0.
Cole falls to 5-3 on the season. The left-hander allowed two runs on four hits over 7 1/3-plus innings. He struck out six and walked two batters.
Scrubb moved to 5-1 on year. He gave up one hit over 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. The right-hander struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
Liberty had two hits in the contest. High Point collected seven.
Before the contests, Liberty honored its eight seniors. Alex Close, Shawn Clowers, Clay Keranen, Jared Lyons, Nick Paxton, Matt Pennington, Becker Sankey and Perritt were recognized.
The Flames and Panthers will meet in the final game of the regular season for both squads, tomorrow. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
