With the win, Liberty moves to 10-2 in Big South play and 22-10 overall. UNC Asheville falls to 3-12 in conference play and 6-27 overall. The Flames have won 13 out of 14 at home this season.
After both teams were held hitless through the first 3 ½ innings, Liberty bunched four hits together to plate to take a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of fourth. Shortstop Matt Williams (Fr., Franklin, Tenn.) opened the frame by ripping a double down the left field line for the first hit of the contest. Center fielder Redal (Jr., Moses Lake, Wash.) followed with a single to right, scoring Williams for a 1-0 Liberty lead. Right fielder Doug Bream (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.) made it three hits in a row with a double off the bottom of the right field wall, bringing home Redal for a 2-0 advantage. Two batters later, designated hitter Cody Brown (Sr., Cumming, Ga.) lined a run-scoring, two-base hit off the right-center field wall, giving the Flames a 3-0 lead.
Liberty starter Shawn Teufel (Jr., Tequista, Fla.) held the Bulldogs hitless through the first five innings. In the sixth, UNC Asheville first baseman Justin Schumer doubled with one out for the first Bulldog hit. However, the Flames left-hander closed out the frame, stranding Schumer at second base.
The Flames extended their advantage to 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth. Redal was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After two batters were retired, Tyler Bream (Fr., Zelienople, Pa.) connected for his fifth home run of the year to extend the Liberty lead.
In the eighth, the Flames broke open the contest with four runs. Redal opened the inning with his fifth home run of the year, a blast over the right field fence, upping the Liberty advantage to 6-0. Back-to-back doubles by catcher Errol Hollinger (Sr., Upland, Calif.) and Tyler Bream plated the second run of the inning for the Flames. Later, first baseman Trey Wimmer (Fr., Greenwood, S.C.) singled home two more runs with a knock through the left side of the infield for the final of 9-0.
Teufel runs his record to 5-1 on the season. The junior gave up two hits, striking out nine and walking two hitters over seven frames. Relievers Carter Browning (Jr., RHP, Ada, Okla.) and Chris McDougal (Fr., RHP, Poquoson, Va.) each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the contest. The trio combined for the first shutout of the season, and the first since April 18 of last season, when David Stokes and current Flame hurler Andrew Wilson (Sr., Cary, N.C.) shutout VMI at Worthington Stadium, 8-0.
Bulldog starter Taylor Wohlwend drops to 2-8 on the year. The right-hander allowed seven runs on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings of work.
Redal and Tyler Bream had two hits each for Liberty. Right fielder Danny Batz had two hits for UNC Ashevile.
The two teams meet again tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader at Worthington Stadium. The first game gets underway at 1 p.m.
