Bulldog right-hander Ryan Dull pitched a complete game, as UNC Asheville downed the Liberty Flames, 9-2, in the first game of a Big South doubleheader, Saturday at Worthington Stadium
Liberty falls to 10-3 in the Big South and 22-11overall. UNC Asheville moves to 4-12 in conference play and 7-27 overall. The setback was only the second for the Flames at home this season. Liberty has posted a 13-2 record at Worthington Stadium on the year.
The visiting Bulldogs jumped out to an early advantage with the game's first run in the second inning. UNC Asheville catcher Reed Keiser doubled into the left-field gap to lead off the frame, and moved to third base on a ground out by designated hitter Derrick Hopkins. Center fielder Catlin Carter then dropped a single into right for a 1-0 lead.
After Liberty stranded runners at the corners in the bottom of the third, the Bulldogs extended their advantage in the top half of the fourth, plating four runs. UNC Asheville began their four-run frame with a leadoff walk and back-to-back singles to load the bases with no one out. Liberty was able to cut down a runner at home plate for the first out of the inning. However, second base Jordan Lurie singled to center field to score a run. Carter, who earlier singled, also scored on the play, as Flames' center fielder Curran Redal (Jr., Moses Lake, Wash.) misplayed the single. Two batters later, third baseman Justin Schumer chased home two more runners with a base knock, upping the Bulldog lead to 5-0.
In the home half of the fourth, Liberty got on the score board. With one out, third baseman Tyler Bream (Fr., Zelienople, Pa.) ripped his sixth home run of the season, out over the left field wall, making it, 5-1.
Liberty once again cut into the UNC Asheville edge in the fifth inning. With one out, P.J. Jimenez (Jr., Yucaipa, Calif.) singled through the left side of the infield. Two batters later, Redal lined a triple inside right field line and into the corner, scoring Jimenez, trimming the Bulldogs advantage to 5-2.
UNC Asheville used a Liberty fielding miscue to extend their lead in the seventh. Keiser opened the frame by lifting a fly ball to right field, which Flames' right fielder Casey Brown (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif.) dropped for a two-base error. Two batters later, Carter singled past the first base bag to plate Keiser for a 6-2 Bulldog advantage.
Liberty threatened the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Jimenez doubled into the left field corner and moved to third base on a ground out. Redal walked with two outs to put runners on the corners, but UNC Asheville starter Ryan Dull was able to end the threat by inducing an inning-ending ground ball.
In the eighth, the Bulldogs added three runs. Schmuer doubled into the left field corner with one out and scored on a two-out single by first baseman Mike Vaughan. After moving to second base on a wild pitch, Vaughan came home with the second run of the inning on a single by Keiser. Hopkins followed with a run-scoring single for the final score of 9-2.
Liberty starter Cody Brown (Sr., Cummings, Ga.) falls to 1-2 on the season. The right-hander gave up six runs, four earned, on 12 hits over 6 1/3 innings.
Dull picks up the victory to improve his record to 3-6 on the year, as the Bulldog right-hander allowed two runs, while scattering 10 hits in pitching his third complete game of the season.
Redal had three hits in the contest for the Flames. Carter had four hits to lead UNC Asheville.
