With their seventh straight victory, the Flames move to 5-1 in the Big South Conference and 17-5 overall. The Blue Hose fall to 1-8 in their first year in the conference and 5-16 overall. Liberty's seventh consecutive victory ties the team's season high, matching a seven game span from March 6-13. In addition, Liberty's 17-5 record is its best start since 2006, when the Flames started with the same identical mark
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Liberty erased the Presbyterian lead, en route to the victory. Center fielder Curran Redal (Jr., Moses Lake, Wash.) started things against Blue Hose reliever Daniel Hill with a single through the right side of the infield. Right fielder Doug Bream (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.) followed by ripping a double into the right-center field gap, chasing home Redal to knot the contest at 1-1. After intentional walks to left fielder Jeff Jefferson (So., Danville, Va.) and catcher Errol Hollinger (Sr., Upland, Calif.) loaded the bases, reliever Andrew Foushee walked third baseman Tyler Bream (Fr., Zelienople, Pa.) forcing in the run for the 2-1 victory.
Both starting pitchers used double plays to get out of one-out jams during the early innings. In the top of the third, Liberty left-hander Steven Evans (So., Amherst, Va.) induced a ground ball double play with Blue Hose runners on the corners. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Presbyterian right-hander Garrett Moore was able to end a Liberty bases-loaded threat, with a ground ball double play.
The Blue Hose got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning. Left fielder Jesse Harmon led off the top half of the frame with a single through the middle. Two batters later, center fielder Cory Lyda tripled off the left field wall, scoring Harmon with the first run of the contest.
Evans runs his record to 4-0 with his second complete game in as many starts. The left-hander went the distance Saturday in a 7-3 victory at High Point. Evans allowed one run on six hits, striking five and walked one over nine innings.
Blue Hose starter Garrett Morris and reliever Mitchell Odom combined to hold the Flames scoreless through the first eight innings, yielding four hits. Hill takes the loss to fall to 0-3 on the year. The reliever gave up two runs on two hits, walking two, both intentionally.
Liberty's Doug Bream had three of Liberty's six hits, while third baseman Jared Combs had three of the Presbyterian's six hits.
The Blue Hose and Flames meet again tomorrow in the middle contest of the Big South series at Worthington Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
