With their fourth-straight victory, Liberty runs their Big South record to 3-1 and 14-5 overall. High Point falls to 1-5 in conference play and 5-12 overall.
After the first inning, Evans (So., Amherst, Va.) cruised throughout the remainder of the contest, keeping the Panther batters in check to run his record to 3-0. The sophomore allowed three runs on nine hits. He struck out three and walked one. He becomes the first Flames pitcher to pitch a complete game this season.
The visiting Flames jumped on the scoreboard in their first at bat of the game, striking for a run with two outs. Right fielder Doug Bream (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.) lined a two-out single to center field and moved to second on an infield single by catcher Errol Hollinger (Sr., Upland, Calif.). Third baseman Tyler Bream (Fr., Zelienople, Pa.) followed with a RBI single to right field, plating Doug Bream for a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers countered in the bottom of inning. Left fielder Pablo Rosario was hit by pitch to open the home half of the first and advanced to third on an errant throw by Liberty second baseman Kizuku Scott (Hampton, Va.) on a bunt single by shortstop Alfie Wheeler. Second baseman Jeff Cowan followed with a double just inside the right field line, chasing home both runs for a 2-1 High Point advantage.
Liberty knotted the contest in the third stanza, once again plating a run with two outs. Doug Bream singled through the middle and moved to second on a two-out fielding error by Panther third baseman Murray White IV on grounder by Hollinger. Just like in the first inning, Tyler Bream then delivered Doug Bream with a run-scoring single, knotting the game at 2-2.
In the fourth inning, the Flames took advantage of two High Point miscues to stake themselves to a 4-2 lead. With one out, designated hitter Zane Bator (Jr., Moses Lake, Wash.) beat out an infield single to the hole between shortstop and third base. Scott followed with a hit-and-run single, moving Bator to third base. Shortstop Matt Williams (Fr., Franklin, Tenn.) then bounced a grounder to third, which was misplayed by Panther third baseman Sal Pezzino, allowing Bator to score for a 3-2 Liberty lead. With runners at the corners during the ensuing at bat, Williams took off on an attempted steal of second and when catcher Kyle Mahoney's throw sailed into center field, Scott come home to make it, 4-2 Liberty.
Liberty extended their advantage with a run in the fifth inning. With one out, Hollinger singled to center field and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. The next batter, Tyler Bream, then drove in his third run of the game, singling sharply through the middle to plate Hollinger, upping the Flames' lead to 5-2.
In the top of the sixth, Liberty added to its advantage, scoring for the fourth straight inning. With one out, Scott through the left side of the infield and advanced to second base on a single up the middle by Williams. Center fielder Curran Redal (Jr., Moses Lake, Wash.) followed by ripping a single into right field, chasing home Scott, pushing the Flames' lead to 6-2.
The Flames added to their cushion in the eighth, benefitting from outfield error to push across a run. Scott lifted a fly ball to right field to open the inning, which High Point right fielder dropped for a two-base error. Two batters later, Redal lined a single into right-center field to score Scott for a 7-2 edge.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Panthers scored a run on a triple by first baseman Billy Alvino and a sacrifice fly for the final score of 7-3.
High Point starter Jamie Serber took the loss to drop to 1-2 on the year. The Panther right-hander gave up six runs on 13 hits over the first six innings.
Tyler Bream paced Liberty at the plate with three hits and three RBIs. Scott also had three hits for the Flames, scoring three times. Wheeler had two hits for the Panthers.
Liberty and High Point square off in the final contest of their three-game Big South series tomorrow afternoon at Coy Willard Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
