Strong Opening Round Keeps Flames Near Top of Leaderboard

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – Liberty opened the Giles-Spratley Collegiate with a 6-under par 282 and finds itself in third place heading into tomorrow's final round of competition.
Following a 36-hole day of play at the Independence Golf Club (par 72, 7,135 yards), the Flames have posted a cumulative 6-under par 570 (282-288).
Much like the Flames, Charleston blitzed the course during the morning flight with an 18-under par 270 and currently leads the 14-team field with an overall 19-under par 557 (270-287).
The only team standing between the Flames and the Cougars is FGCU, who is holding down second place with a 14-under par 562 (284-278).
Tournament host Richmond (282-290) and fellow local program VCU (285-287) round out the top five teams in a share of fourth place with a 4-under par 572.
All nine members of Liberty's roster are competing in the event and Josh Ryan leads the way for the Flames' starting five.
The senior is tied for fifth place with a 4-under par 140 (69-71) after leading the field in par-3 scoring (-2/2.75 scoring average) and after carding his second eagle of the 2025-26 season.
Silas Haarer is next on Liberty's starting lineup as he is tied for 22nd place with a 1-under par 143 (69-74). The freshman opened the event with his fourth sub-70 round of the season thanks to seven birdies during the morning flight.
Michael Lugiano shares 22nd place with Haarer after he also signed for a 1-under par 143 (72-71). The sophomore excelled on the par-4 holes today, as he enters tomorrow's final round ranked eighth in the field (-1/3.95 scoring average).
Two of the Flames individuals in the event finished the 36-hole day of action inside the top 15. Brett Reid is tied for seventh place following a 3-under par 141 (70-71), while Evan Barbin is tied for 12th place one shot back with a 2-under par 142 (68-74).
Liberty's starting five will be sent off the No. 1 tee (par 4, 460 yards), starting at 8:50 a.m. on Tuesday for tomorrow's final round.
