
Haarer Paces Flames During Round 1 at The Hayt

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Liberty's Silas Haarer overcame three early bogeys to post a 1-under 71 during the first round of The Hayt on Saturday.
Starting play on the back nine at the Sawgrass Country Club (par 72, 7,092 yards), the freshman bogeyed the first three par-4 holes he played to start the morning (No. 10, 13 and 14).
However, he closed his first nine with birdies at the par-4, No. 17 hole and par-5, No. 18 hole to make the turn at 1-over par.
Haarer continued his birdie run with his third-straight birdie at the par-4, No. 1 hole and wrapped up the under-par score for the day with a fourth birdie at the par-5, No. 8 hole.
Haarer led Liberty on the day with four birdies, while each of the remaining Flames in Liberty's starting lineup carded three birdies apiece on Saturday. As a team, Liberty finished the first day at The Hayt ranked 10th in the field with 16 birdies.
Overall, Liberty sits in a share of 13th place following a 1-over par round of 291. The Flames finished the day tied with No. 20 Duke.
The 16-team field includes eight teams who entered the tournament in the top 25 of the latest Scoreboard Powered by Clippd national rankings.
No. 6 LSU opened the event with a 14-under par 274 and they are two shots clear of No. 1 Virginia, who opened the event with a 12-under par 276.
No. 2 Auburn and No. 21 Charlotte are five shots off the pace following an opening round 9-under par 279.
The 16-team field will return to the Sawgrass Country Club for the second round, starting at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning. Liberty will head off the No. 10 tee beginning at 8:48 a.m.
