
Lugiano Guides Flames to 6th Place Finish at Sea Best Invitational

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. – Liberty's Michael Lugiano helped the Flames open the spring season with a sixth-place finish at the Sea Best Invitational on Tuesday.
The sophomore closed the tournament with a clean card, signing for a bogey-free round of 5-under par 66 thanks to five birdies at the Atlantic Beach Country Club (par 71, 6,860 yards).
The fourth-best round of the day allowed Lugiano to shoot up the individual leaderboard 27 spots to finish the event in ninth place with an overall score of 3-under par 139 (73-66).
Due to the cold temperatures that have blanketed the East Coast for the last week, the Jacksonville-hosted tournament was shortened to a 36-hole event prior to the start of play.
As a team, Liberty finished in sixth place with a final score of 5-over par 573 (289-284), which included a five-shot improvement over yesterday's opening round.
The Flames finished the event well ahead of the other two Conference USA programs in the 14-team field.
Liberty finished nine shots clear of Kennesaw State, who placed ninth with a 14-over par 582 (291-291). LA Tech was one spot further down the leaderboard in 10th place with a 16-over par 584 (289-295).
Following behind Lugiano for the Flames was Evan Barbin, who finished tied for 28th place with a 2-over par 144 (70-74).
Josh Ryan finished tied for 39th place with a 4-over par 146 (73-73), while Ike Joy finished tied for 43rd place with a 5-over par 147 (73-74).
Brett Reid, who was playing in his first tournament in over a year and a half due to an injury, closed the event with an even-par 71 on Tuesday. Overall, he finished tied for 54th place with an 8-over par 150 (79-71) in his return to competitive golf.
No. 5 Florida closed the event with a 9-under par 275 on Tuesday to capture its third-straight tournament win this season and fourth-consecutive title at this event.
The Gators' overall winning score was a 10-under par 558 (283-275), which placed them one shot ahead of UNCW's 9-under par 559 (280-279).
Texas A&M's Aaron Pounds (70-65) and UCF's Chase Haygood (70-65) matched scorecards to finish tied atop the 86-man leaderboard with a 7-under par 135. Haygood bested Pounds in a playoff to capture individual medalist honors.
