
Liberty Opens Season with 6th Place Showing at Rod Myers Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. β Liberty opened its 2025-26 campaign with a sixth-place showing at this weekend's Rod Myers Invitational, hosted by Duke.Β Β

Liberty carded the fifth-best round on Sunday to finish the event in sixth place with a 4-over par 868 (292-287-289). This is the third-straight time the Flames have finished this event in sixth place, also doing so in 2022 and 2024.

The Duke University Golf Club (par 72, 7,154 yards) showed its teeth during Sunday's final run, playing over a stroke higher than Saturday's second round. Today, the field played the course at a 74.42 stroke average, a much higher average than yesterday (73.31).

Only three teams in the 10-team field found red figures on Sunday, with two of the three only finishing under par by one stroke.

Tournament host Duke ran away with the team title, posting a winning score of 20-under par 844 (282-282-280) to win by nine strokes. On Sunday, they carded a closing round of 8-under par 280.

UNCW finished in a distance second place with an 11-under par 853 (283-283-287), while Indiana took third place with a 6-under par 858 (286-285-287).

Liberty's top finisher in the event was Josh Ryan, who carded an even par 216 (73-71-72) to finish tied for 18th place.

The senior offset four bogeys with four pars during the final round on Sunday. Ryan's top-20 finish benefited from him leading the event in par-5 scoring (-7/4.42 scoring average).

Liberty had three other starters post top-30 finishes in their season-opening event. Ike Joy (74-72-71) and Michael Lugiano (72-72-73) shared 23rd place with a 1-over par 217. Joy paced Liberty's play on Sunday with a closing round 1-under par 71 thanks to four birdies.

Luke Libbey finished one shot behind them in 27th place with a 2-over par 218 (73-72-73).

Outside of its five starters, the Flames also had three golfers competing in this event as individuals. Freshman Silas Haarer kicked off his career as a Flames with an 11th-place finish, carding a 1-under par 215 (72-69-74).
