Noblit’s Late Goal Secures 1-1 Draw Against No. 24 Virginia Tech

LYNCHBURG, Va. – With just under five minutes remaining, Liberty's Haley Noblit sent a perfect ball in from outside the goal box, sending it just over a diving goalkeeper's reach on the far post to earn Liberty (2-1-2) a 1-1 draw against No. 24 Virginia Tech (3-1-1) on Thursday night.
Liberty controlled possession in the first half of the contest despite the Hokies gaining the lead on just two shots to Liberty's seven. Virginia Tech's Anna Weir found a hole in Liberty's defense, sending a low cross easily into the goal from just in front of the penalty mark. The score was her second tally of the season.
Freshman Lauren Flax came close to her second goal of the season. She found space at the top of the penalty and sent a rocket down a line. The shot beat the keeper but rang off the bottom of the crossbar to keep the Lady Flames down a score.
Virginia Tech controlled the pace in the second half of the game while holding the lead. The Lady Flames managed six shots to five from the Hokies, but they were prudent in restricting high-level chances.
Midfielder Haley Noblit flipped the script in the final minutes of the contest, with Liberty pressing for any chance on goal. The Hokies were unable to clear the ball in their defensive third. Noblit saw a chance to get a quick shot off her left foot towards the far end of the goal. She sent it just off the goalkeeper's outstretched glove and under the crossbar to equalize the game in the closing minutes. The tally was her first of the season and the third in the sophomore's career.
Liberty earns a second consecutive result against a ranked Virginia Tech squad. The Lady Flames bested the No. 21 Hokies 2-1 last season. With a win tonight, Liberty would have pushed its all-time record to over .500, but instead moves to 311-311-60 as a program.
Scoring Summary
27' – Virginia Tech – Anna Weir (2) – Hannah Pachan, Natalie Mitchell
87' – Liberty – Haley Noblit (1)
