NORFOLK, Va. – Ivy Garner's score in the final five minutes lifted Liberty (3-1-2) to a 1-0 triumph at Old Dominion (2-1-1) on Sunday night. The Lady Flames come home victorious with a score in the final five minutes of the contest.
The forward drew a foul to earn a free kick on the end line, earning a shot corner attempt on the far side of the field. Redshirt senior Bri Myers took the free kick, sending a ball on the ground to the center of the 18-yard box. Garner sprung free, cut in front of the defense and deflected a shot into the near side of the net for the lead. The tally is her third of the year and her first game-winner of the season.
The goal came after the Monarchs controlled possession and action for the majority of the contest.
"We struggled with their (ODU) pressure in the second half," head coach Lang Wedemeyer said. "The team gritted it out and made the most of the opportunity in the end."
"With us having just played the No. 24 team in the country (Virginia Tech) and traveling to play a fresh team, we put together a gutsy performance. To God be the Glory!"
The Lady Flames concluded the week with a 1-0-1 against in-state rivals. Liberty earned a 1-1 draw, also with a score in the final 10 minutes, against No. 24 Virginia Tech on Thursday.
Scoring Summary
