MIAMI, FLA. – Jake Potts and Tyler August combined to shut down the FIU Panthers, leading the Liberty Flames to a 3-0 victory Sunday afternoon at FIU Baseball Stadium. With the win, the Flames take the three-game CUSA series, 2-1.
Potts and August held the Panthers in check throughout the contest, scattering six hits. The two pitchers matched the FIU pitching staff through the first seven innings, each working out of a scoring threat, allowing the Flames to break through in the scoreless game in the eighth inning.
With one out in the top of the eighth, Liberty center fielder Michael Robertson singled and stole second base. Second baseman Landon Scilley followed with a single to left field to score Robertson for a 1-0 lead.
Left fielder Nick Barone hit a two-run home run in the ninth, his 10th of the year, for the final margin of 3-0. Barone had two hits in the game.
Both pitching staffs worked out of scoring threats in the middle innings. Liberty left the bases loaded with two out in the top of the fourth and left a runner at third base in the fifth. FIU also loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but was turned away on a spectacular running catch by Robertson. In the sixth, the Panthers left the go-ahead run on second base.
Right fielder Camden Troyer also had two hits and scored a run for the Flames.
Liberty moves to 29-23 overall and 9-15 in CUSA. FIU drops to 27-25 overall and 10-13 in CUSA.
