CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 3 Virginia edged No. 7 Liberty 1-0, Tuesday night at Turf Field in a top-10 matchup between Commonwealth teams.
Virginia bolsters its overall record to 10-1. Liberty falls to 10-2 and sees a six-match winning streak snapped following the non-conference setback. The Lady Flames were shut out tonight for the first time this season.

Virginia struck for the only goal of the game in the ninth minute. The Cavaliers' Suze Leemans sent a ball from just outside the circle that deflected off the pad of Liberty goalkeeper Diane Saint Martin, caroming to the center of the circle and onto the stick of Caroline Nemec. Nemec fired a low shot past Saint Martin for her second goal of the season.
Liberty had its share of scoring chances, including a pair of penalty corners in the second period and one in the third. On the Lady Flames' first chance of the second frame (22:25 mark), Julieta Tornati saw her initial shot blocked, followed by a pair of saves from Nilou Lempers on shots from Liberty's Josefina Tomasi and Lou Combrinck. On Liberty's next penalty corner shortly after, Tornati's shot sailed wide. In the third quarter, Tornati saw another one of her attempts sail wide at the 40:12 mark.
Liberty's best scoring opportunity of the fourth quarter came with just over 6:30 to play. Combrinck sent a crossing pass into the circle from the right baseline that hit a UVA defender's stick and found the stick of Tomasi. Tomasi sent a pass to Zoé Gaillard, who redirected the ball towards an open cage. Lempers made a diving save as Gaillard's attempt nearly trickled in. On the ensuing rebound, the Lady Flames' Maite Altamirano ripped a reverse that Lempers turned aside. Neither team managed a shot the rest of the way.
