
No. 10 Syracuse Edges No. 6 Liberty in Shootout For 3-2 Win in NCAA Sweet 16

PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 10 Syracuse edged No. 6 Liberty in a shootout for a 3-2 win in the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship Sweet 16, Friday at Princeton's Bedford Field.
In a dramatic game that saw the Lady Flames even it up at 2-2 with less than a minute to play in regulation, followed by two 10-minute overtime sessions, the Orange scored on four of their five shootout attempts for the win. Liberty only managed successful conversions on 2-of-4 attempts. Syracuse's Aubrey Turner scored the shootout winner on the Orange's fifth round.
Liberty sees its season come to an end with a 17-3 record. Syracuse (13-6) advances to Sunday's NCAA quarterfinals/Elite Eight, where it will face host No. 3 Princeton (16-3). The Tigers topped No. 20 Fairfield 3-1 in Friday's first game at Bedford Field.

Syracuse struck first early in the second quarter, with Bo van Campen finding the left side of the cage in the 19th minute. Liberty answered just before halftime (27:14 mark) on a Kyleigh Faust rebound goal on a penalty corner.
The Lady Flames had a chance to take their first lead of the day in the 41st minute when they earned a penalty stroke, but Dara Semmartin's attempt was saved by Syracuse goalkeeper Jessie Eiselin. In the final minute of the third period, the Orange converted on a counterattack opportunity after a Liberty penalty corner. Syracuse scored in transition, with Aubrey Turner finding Hattie Madden at the 44:43 mark.
In the fourth quarter, Liberty looked for the equalizer and pulled goalkeeper Diane Saint Martin with 3:13 left. The Lady Flames also had a player-up situation on two occasions in the fourth quarter and in the first overtime, with the Orange being assessed a pair of yellow cards. Liberty finally broke through for the game-tying goal with less than a minute to play in regulation (59:18 mark) on its sixth and final penalty corner of the frame. After Julieta Tornati's initial shot was block, Tornati collected the ball in the left side of the circle and sent a cross towards the front of the cage. Josefina Tomasi got a touch on the ball, sending into it the goal cage.
