JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Lady Flames erupted with three second half goals to top Jacksonville State 4-0 on the road to open Conference USA play on Thursday. Liberty (9-0-2, 1-0 CUSA) continues its unbeaten season with the road victory over the Gamecocks (3-5-0, 0-1 CUSA).
Halle Engle (8) opened the scoring for the seventh time this season in the 22' minute. Ivy Garner sent a cross to the flip side of the field, Avery Paulson received the pass and found Engle in front of the net. Liberty was held scoreless for the remainder of the first half.
Paulson (2) increased the lead to 2-0 in the 63' minute. Garner connected on a cross to the freshman, who deftly directed the shot past the keeper.
Just three minutes later, Taylor Mason (1) netted her first goal of the season, stealing the ball from the Gamecocks off a throw-in. Mason was making her way to the center of the field but released a strike to the near post that slid past an outstretched goalkeeper.
Ava Goodman stretched the lead to 4-0 in the 75' minute with a great hustle play. The forward chased down a long pass from Isabella Wedemeyer at the end line. Goodman pushed a shot past a charging goalkeeper but it bounced off the far post back towards Goodman. The junior fought off a defender and was able to dribble the rebound into the side of the net.
Thoughts from Head Coach Lang Wedemeyer
"It was a good start to conference play. It's a hard trip to make and I am proud of how we played, especially in the second half."
