Engle’s Third Goal in as Many Games and Garner’s Late Score, Lifts Liberty over VCU 2-1
8/22/2024 9:28:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Just before the 15-minute mark of the game, Sallie Garner crossed a ball from the far side of the field to the top of the goal box. Engle rose over her defender and ripped a header past the lunging VCU goalkeeper.
Frustration mounted for VCU in the second half. The Rams picked up three of their four yellow cards within 10 minutes in the second half. Both VCU coaches were issued a yellow card at the 61' and 66' mark.
The Rams managed to even the game in the 66th minute. VCU caught Liberty goalkeeper, Peyton Huber, out of position and sent a header into an empty net. Huber came out of the goal box to make a play on a bouncing ball but was beaten to the spot by VCU's Milica Bulatovic. The ball was sent to the center of the penalty box where it found Kanna Matsuhisa who buried her second goal of the season.
Matsuhisa has scored both of VCU's two total goals this season. VCU fell 2-1 to Old Dominion on Aug. 15.
The Lady Flames made a late push in the second half and earned one of six corner opportunities. With 10 minutes left in the contest, Elise Graf sent the corner and Ivy Garner leaked out into open space and sent the ball over VCU's goalkeeper who was making a play on the ball.
The score was the first for Ivy Garner this season (1 assist). The forward was selected as the Conference USA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.
Liberty picks up its second consecutive victory over the in-state rival. The Lady Flames opened the 2023 season with a 2-1 triumph at VCU on Aug. 18, 2023.
The Lady Flames prepare for a road match against ETSU on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
