TEXARKANA, Ark. – Playing in its first-ever CUSA Men's Golf Championship, the Flames find themselves in third place following day one of the conference championship event.
Liberty carded a 2-over par 290 during its first of potentially five rounds of play at the Texarkana Country Club (par 72, 6,969 yards).
The tournament will start with a 54-hole event where all eight conference teams will challenge to advance to match play, featuring the top four teams.
Two rounds of match play will be contested on Thursday, starting with a pair of semifinal matches during the morning session. The winners will square off during the afternoon to determine the 2024 Conference USA Men's Golf champion.
The Flames were paced by Josh Ryan on Monday, who was one of seven players in the 40-man field to card a sub-par round. The sophomore is tied for sixth place following a 1-under par 71, his 22nd round at par or better this season (22-of-31/71.0 percent).
Brett Reid is one shot back of Ryan and is tied for eighth place following an opening round of even par 72. Reid got back to level par for the day with back-to-back birdies at the No. 15 and No. 16 holes.
Ike Joy is tied for 13th place following an opening round 1-over par 73. After overcoming a double bogey on his first hole, Joy carded his third birdie of the day by nearly reaching the green at the par-4, No. 17 hole (291 yards) and getting up and down from the greenside rough.
Louisiana Tech carded its lowest 18-hole total of the season and currently leads the eight-team field following an 8-under par 280. The Bulldogs finished the first day of the championship with 20 birdies to lead the field.
Western Kentucky's Luke Fuller and Louisiana Tech's Lake Juban currently lead the 40-man field following opening round scores of 4-under par 68.
