
Cannings Places 19th in NCAA 100 Fly

ATHENS, Ga. – Liberty freshman Kamryn Cannings finished 19th in the 100 butterfly at the 2024 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championship, Friday at Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga.
Cannings came within three places and 0.11 seconds of qualifying for tonight's finals. She will compete in the 200 butterfly tomorrow.

Cannings will compete in the 200 butterfly tomorrow, the fourth and final day of the 2024 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships. The prelim session begins at 10 a.m. and includes the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke and 200 butterfly.

Notable
- During this week's four-day meet, the top 16 from morning prelims each day qualify for evening finals. A total of 58 swimmers competed in 100 fly prelims this morning.
- The NCAA record holder in this event, Virginia's Gretchen Walsh, earned the top qualifying time this morning, 48.26. Mia Kragh of Cal claimed the eighth and final spot in the A Final with her 51.07. It took 51.34 to qualify for the B Final.
- Cannings entered as the 14th seed in the field at 51.26. She competed in the second circle-seeded heat, swimming in lane two of heat seven. The freshman finished fifth in her heat in 51.45, which was won by Texas' Emma Sticklen in 49.73.
- In the A Final, Walsh smashed her own NCAA, pool, meet, American and U.S. Open record, swimming 47.42. Sticklen placed second in 49.70, while Texas' Olivia Bray (50.52) came in third.
- Cannings' 51.45 this morning was the fastest qualifying time by any freshman in the field, with the next fastest freshman being Miranda Grana of Texas A&M (51.76).
- Cannings is the third Liberty freshman all-time to compete at the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, joining Jess Reinhardt (2013 – 100 fly, 200 fly) and Payton Keiner (2018 – 100 back, 200 back).
- This is the eighth time in 14 years of the program's history that at least one Lady Flame has been selected to compete in the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships. The Lady Flames have had two All-America honorable mention finishers, in Brye Ravettine (13th in 50 free, 2012) and Jess Reinhardt (10th in 100 fly, 2014). All competitors at the cancelled 2020 NCAA Championships were named All-Americans, so Keiner received All-American honors that year.
