MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Flames enter tomorrow's final round at the General Hackler Championship in seventh place and part of a five-team block separated by five shots.
With only one team in the 14-team field finding red figures on Tuesday, Liberty carded a 6-over par 294 during its second trip around The Dunes Golf & Beach Club (par 72, 7,233 yards).
The course continued to play tough on Tuesday. The 14-team field posted a 74.84 scoring average, an increase of almost a half stroke over yesterday's opening round.
The only team to tame the course was the home team. Tournament host Coastal Carolina fired a blistering 8-under par 280, eight shots better than any other team on the day.
With the under-par score, the Chanticleers vaulted to the top of the leaderboard with an overall 2-under par 574 (294-280).
No. 48 Louisville, last night's clubhouse leader, is just two shots off the lead with an overall even par 576 (286-290).
No. 15 ETSU, the top-ranked team in the field, is one shot behind Louisville in third place with a 1-over par 577 (287-290).
Liberty currently sits in seventh place with an overall 8-over par 584 (290-294). The Flames are part of a five-team group that is separated by a total of five shots, starting with Furman's 4-over par 580 (292-288).
Furman's Clark Akers, who is competing in the event as an individual, holds the overnight lead with a 7-under par 137 (69-68).
Liberty's top two golfers in the field are Josh Ryan (73-72) and Ike Joy (72-73), who share 15th place with a 1-over par 145.
Ryan struggled out of the gates and was 4-over par after seven holes on Tuesday. However, the sophomore closed with two birdies and his first eagle of the 2023-24 season coming on the par-5, No. 15 hole (540 yards).
Joy was inside the top 10 on the individual leaderboard after he was 2-under par on the front side on Tuesday. However, he closed with three bogeys on the back nine to drop back to a share of 15th place.
The Flames will be the first team out on the course on Wednesday, playing the event's final round with No. 28 North Florida and San Francisco. The three teams will head off the No. 1 tee, starting at 8 a.m.
