GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Following 36 holes of play at the Gator Invitational, Liberty remains inside the top 10 of the field and enters tomorrow's final round in eighth place.
The Flames finished two trips around the Mark Bostick Golf Course (par 70, 6,701 yards) at 5-over par 565 (285-280). Liberty improved by five strokes during its second time around Florida's home golf course.
The Gators used their home course knowledge to stake claim to the top two spots on the 16-team field leaderboard.
Florida's A team currently leads the field with a 22-under par 538 (276-262). The Gator's B team is two shots behind them with a 20-under par 540 (270-270). Florida entered the tournament ranked No. 23 in the country in the latest Clippd national rankings.
No. 26 North Florida holds down third place with an 11-under par 549 (273-276). FAU (6-under 554/281-273) and No. 36 USF (2-under par 558/277-281) round out the top five teams on the leaderboard who all haul from the "Sunshine State".
Florida's Ian Gilligan leads the 84-man field with a 9-under par 131 (69-62) and is one shot clear of North Florida's Andrew Riley's 8-under par 132 (68-64).
A total of 20 golfers are currently in red figures, including Liberty's Josh Ryan, who is tied for 11th place with a 3-under par 137 (68-69). The sophomore paced the Flames on the day with seven birdies.
Brett Reid posted the other sub-70 round of the day for the Flames. Reid turned in a 3-under par 67 for the second round on a clean card that included three birdies and 15 pars. It was his third round in the 60s of the season.
The 16-team field will return to the Mark Bostick Golf Course early on Saturday to try to make this a 54-hole tournament.
The event was moved up one day in an attempt to beat a weather system that is forecasted to bring rain most of the rest of the weekend.
The third and final round is scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday morning with a modified shotgun start. Liberty will tee off at No. 10, along with golfers from Furman and Kentucky.
