LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty women's soccer team celebrated Senior Night by improving to 8-0 in 2023, snagging a 2-0 shutout victory over visiting Appalachian State on Thursday night.
With the win, the Lady Flames extended their NCAA Division I leading unbeaten streak to 21 games (18-0-3). Liberty remains just one of three teams in the country with a win in every event of 2023 along with BYU (7-0) and Florida State (5-0).
Freshman Avenley Monteith opened the scoring with a shot that went bar down on a first-half corner opportunity.
Forward Ivy Garner created breathing room for Liberty, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the 61st minute. Garner deposited a shot, finding herself in the right spot for a ricocheting free kick.
Liberty recorded back-to-back clean sheets for the second time this season, after topping Marshall 2-0 on Sunday. The Lady Flames recorded three straight shutouts from Aug. 20-27.
Before the game, Liberty honored eight seniors including manager Gabi Burford, Annie Slovak, Chloe Marr, Lena James, Marta Alexandre, Rachel DeRuby, Rebekah Earnest and Saydie Holland. Bridie Herman, also a graduate senior, was honored in 2022.
Appalachian State falls to 3-4-1 this season and the Lady Flames even the series record to 6-6-1 all-time facing the Mountaineers. The programs played to a 0-0 tie in 2022.
Scoring Summary
30' – Liberty – Avenley Monteith (Sallie Garner)
61' – Liberty – Ivy Garner (Saydie Holland, Lena James)
Thoughts from Head Coach Lang Wedemeyer
"It was a really gritty game, a tough win. They are very physical. They are big and strong which caused us some problems. I thought if we could keep the ball on the ground and connect with our passers, we would be good and it worked out for us in the end. It was a great win for us."
