Liberty Tops VMI 2-0, Finishes Non-Conference Play Undefeated

LEXINGTON, Va. – Rachel DeRuby recorded a goal and an assist as Liberty shuts out in-state foe VMI, 2-0 on Sunday. The Lady Flames finish their non-conference schedule with an unblemished 9-0 mark.
With the win, the Lady Flames extended their NCAA Division I leading unbeaten streak to 22 games (19-0-3). Liberty is just one of two teams in the country with a win in every event of 2023, joining Florida State (6-0).
Liberty's last three matches have all resulted in in 2-0 shutout victories (Marshall, Sept. 10 and Appalachian State, last Thursday).
Two Lady Flames, DeRuby and Allison Hansford (two assists), recorded at least two points on Sunday. DeRuby and Allison each assisted on the opening goal of the game, scored by Chloe Marr.
In the second half, DeRuby received a feed from a running Hansford that the senior slid by the VMI keeper. The score gave Liberty a 2-0 advantage in the 49th minute.
VMI falls to 1-8 this year and the Lady Flames boost their record to 9-3 when facing the Keydets.

- Liberty outshot VMI 19-6, The Lady Flames recorded eight shots on goal to the Keydets' four. The four shots on goal allowed are the most in a game Liberty has surrendered since the season opener at VCU (2-1, Aug. 18) when the Rams recorded five.
- With three points (one goal, one assist) on Sunday, DeRuby now leads the team with 12 points (four goals, four assists).
- Hansford follows her in second with 11 points (three goals, five assists).
- Chloe Marr recorded her first goal of the season. The senior also has two assists this season.
- Hansford's two assists are the most in a game this season for the Lady Flame. The sophomore also scored two goals in a game in a 3-1 victory at UNCW on Aug. 27.
- Goalkeeper Ainsley Leja and the Liberty defense picked up their sixth shutout of the season. Liberty leads Conference USA in goals allowed this season, surrounding just three in nine games.
- Leja's four saves on Sunday matches a season-high from a season-opening 2-1 win at VCU on Aug. 18.
- Leja and defender Lena James played a full 90 minutes on Sunday. The keeper has played every minute of the 2023 season.
- James was a welcomed return, coming off an injury that kept her out for two weeks. The defender played every minute of 2022. She started Thursday's 2-0 win over Appalachian State.
- Liberty registered five corner opportunities and held VMI to just a single chance. The Lady Flames have allowed less than two corner chances a game to their opponents.
- Liberty extended its NCAA Division I leading unbeaten streak to 22 games (19-0-3). The Lady Flames' last loss was a 3-2 defeat at Pitt on Sept. 11, 2022.
