
UTEP Holds On for 3-1 Win Over Liberty

EL PASO, Texas - UTEP held off a fierce Liberty rally in the fourth set, earning a 3-1 win over the visiting Lady Flames, Friday at Memorial Gym.
The Miners improved to 19-8 overall, including 10-5 in Conference USA play while running their home record to a perfect 9-0 on the season. The Lady Flames (15-12, 8-7). saw their four-match winning streak end.
With one day remaining in the regular season, UTEP is tied with New Mexico State for third in CUSA standings while Liberty and FIU are tied for fifth.

The Lady Flames and Miners will play the final match of the CUSA regular-season schedule, tomorrow at 3 p.m. Eastern at Memorial Gym.

- For the match, UTEP outhit Liberty .342-.118. It was the first time since Oct. 3 (WKU) that Liberty's opponent hit .300 or better. The Miners led in kills (58-43), digs (45-33) and blocks (15-5), while the Lady Flames held an 8-6 advantage in aces.
- Danika Washington posted a double-double with 13 kills (.667) and 11 blocks, while Torrance Lovesee (13 kills, 13 digs) fashioned a double-double of her own. Alianza Darley contributed 12 kills, while Kalia Kohler dished out 35 assists. Alyssa Sianez collected 10 digs and Sakira LaCour registered nine kills and six blocks.
- Kamryn Bacus led Liberty with 12 kills, while Madison Blane totaled nine kills, three aces and three blocks. Delaney Dilfer tied for the match high in both assists (35) and aces (3), while Erica Lowery collected six digs.
- Liberty rallied back from a 19-16 deficit in set two, ending the set on a 9-4 run to tie the match at one set apiece.
- After UTEP won set three by 10 points, the Miners held a 24-16 led in the fourth set. The Lady Flames fought off five match points, with Phillips scoring three late kills, but the Miners closed out the match with a 25-21 set-four win.
- Liberty and UTEP were meeting for the first time in volleyball.
- Prior to Liberty's set-two victory tonight, UTEP had won 24 straight sets at Memorial Gym. The last time before tonight that the Miners dropped a set at home was set two against San Francisco on Aug. 31.
- The Lady Flames are 13-8 in sets decided by two points this season.
- Delaney Dilfer needs five more assists to become the 10th active NCAA Division I setter with 4,000 career assists.
- Blane's 126 blocks this season are the fifth most by a Lady Flame in a single season in rally-scoring history (since 2001). Former teammate Lydia Burts finished with 140 blocks last season.
- Bacus moved into a tie with Kate Phillips for the team lead with 15 double-digit kill matches each.
- Prior to tonight, Liberty was 7-1 in its last eight matches and 8-2 in its last 10 contests.
- The Lady Flames went 5-3 in the first match of a back-to-back CUSA series this season.
