
Liberty Battles for 3-1 Comeback Win Over Winthrop

After dropping the opening set, Liberty battled back to win the next three sets and the match, 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-13) during its home opener, Friday at Liberty Arena.
Liberty, playing in front of a facility-record 1,057 fans, evens its record at 2-2. Meanwhile, Winthrop falls to 1-4 on the season, including 1-1 so far at this weekend’s tournament.
Notable Numbers
• Liberty outhit Winthrop .203-.162 for the match, also leading in kills (59-43), aces (7-3) and digs (74-61). Meanwhile, the Eagles led 9-8 in blocks.
• Kamryn Bacus led all players with a season-high-tying 16 kills, collecting a career-high 14 digs for her first career double-double. Delaney Dilfer totaled her second double-double in a row with a season-high 52 assists and 10 digs. Kate Phillips (12 kills, career-high 21 digs) and Trinity Watts (10 kills, three aces, 11 digs) contributed double-doubles as well. Lydia Burts scored 12 kills and added seven blocks, while Erica Lowery collected 14 digs.
• Alayna Jansky scored a team-high 15 kills and added 10 digs for Winthrop. Meanwhile, Brookelynn Thomas totaled 12 kills and five blocks. Isabella Murray dished out a team-high 39 assists, while Madison Gorniak collected 17 digs.
Turning Point
• Winthrop outhit Liberty .303-.051 during a 25-21 set-one Eagles victory. The Lady Flames answered in the second, hitting .319 compared to .167 for Winthrop while winning 25-20 to tie the match at one-all.
• Winthrop appeared on its way to a victory in the third set, leading 14-8 after a block by Murray and Alicia Roberts. Liberty rallied from that point on, taking a 22-19 lead after a pair of blocks which punctuated a 5-0 Flames run. The Eagles battled to within one at 23-22 before Liberty iced the set with a Julia Mangum kill and a Mangum/Bacus block.
Quick Hits
• Liberty is now 33-19 all-time against Winthrop in volleyball, having won the last two meetings. The last time these two teams met was a 3-0 Liberty sweep at Winthrop, Oct. 20, 2017, in the Lady Flames’ last season in the Big South Conference.
• Today was the first time that four Lady Flames recorded double-doubles in the same match since Oct. 8, 2021 at Stetson, when Amaya Williams, Kate Phillips, Kennedi Sutter and Trinity Watts all posted double-doubles.
• Dilfer’s 52 assists tied the Liberty Arena record for assists in a match, set by Liberty’s Amaya Williams on Nov. 7, 2021 against Stetson.
• Phillips’ 21 digs tonight were the most by a Liberty outside hitter in a single match since Gabrielle Vess collected 22 digs against Elon five years ago today, Sept. 2, 2017.
