
VCU Rallies for 3-1 Victory Over Liberty

VCU bounced back from a set-one loss, winning the next three sets to earn a 3-1 (16-25, 25-10, 25-23, 25-19) victory over the visiting Liberty Lady Flames, Friday at the Siegel Center.
The Rams posted a 1-1 record today, the first day of the 2022 season. Likewise, the Lady Flames went 1-1 today, sweeping Elon and falling to VCU in four sets.
Notable Numbers
• VCU outhit Liberty .200-.100 for the match, also leading in digs (44-42) and aces (6-2). The Lady Flames and Rams both posted nine blocks.
• Jasmine Knight recorded a match-high 15 kills to go along with five blocks, while Qairo Bentley posted a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Crew Hoffmeier collected 15 digs to lead VCU.
• Four different Lady Flames (Kamryn Bacus, Lyida Burts, Kate Phillips, Trinity Watts) registered nine kills. Delaney Dilfer dished out a match-high 35 assists and added nine digs and a career-high-tying four blocks. Erica Lowery collected a match-high 17 digs.
Turning Point
• After Liberty earned a 25-16 set-one win, VCU turned the tables in the second set, hitting .375 compared to -.097 for the Lady Flames in a 25-10 Rams win.
• Liberty trailed set three 22-19 before staging a 4-0 rally to pull into the lead at 23-22. However, VCU scored the next three points to take the pivotal third set, 25-23.
Quick Hits
• Liberty is now 14-19 all-time against VCU, as the Rams have won four straight matches in the series since Liberty’s 3-0 win over VCU on Oct. 6, 2015 at the Vines Center.
• VCU has won each of the last six meetings in Richmond. The last time Liberty posted a victory at VCU was Sept. 9, 2003, a 3-0 sweep over the Rams.
• Prior to its second-set loss in tonight’s match, Liberty had opened the season with four straight set victories. The last time Liberty won each of its first four sets to start a campaign was 2015, when the Lady Flames opened with a 3-0 sweep of UNCG before edging Fairleigh Dickinson in four sets the next day.
• Lowery, a transfer from Texas A&M, set a new career high with 16 digs this afternoon against Elon before topping that total by one tonight.
