Despite a weather delay at Osborne Stadium that lasted over 90 minutes, the Liberty women's soccer team held firm, Wednesday afternoon, defeating Longwood, 2-1.
For the third time this year, freshman forward Gabrielle Farrell posted the game-winning goal, while sophomore forward Devon Jones collected her second marker in as many games. Junior forward Isabella Habuda recorded the assist on Jones' goal.
With the win, Liberty moves to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in the Big South. Longwood falls to 4-7 on the season and 1-1 in conference action. Liberty is now 10-4-3 all-time against the Lancers.
Amanda Spencer scored the lone goal for Longwood, receiving an assist from Kathryn Miller.
Liberty goalkeeper Holly Van Noord played the entire contest in the net, making six saves. Longwood's Maria Kirby also finished with six stops.
The Lady Flames outshot Longwood, 14-8, and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Head coach Nate Norman's squad played more aggressively in the second period, outshooting the visitors, 10-3, during the final 45 minutes of play.
Liberty proved the aggressor in the early part of the first period, but Longwood started to create more opportunities in the latter portion. The Lancers outshot the Lady Flames in the period, 5-4, taking four shots on goal.
Liberty's best look at a marker during the opening stanza came in 40th minute. Abigail Persson blasted a shot from outside the 18-yard box, which ricocheted off the crossbar.
Longwood also applied pressure toward the end of the first period, taking three of its four attempts on goal during the final six minutes. Van Noord thwarted all three attempts, keeping the contest scoreless at halftime.
In the second period, Jones put the Lady Flames on the board just before the 59th minute. Habuda set up the play, dishing a quick pass into the box for the sophomore. Jones executed a one-touch shot, placing into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Longwood knotted the contest, 1-1, just over six minutes later. Located on the right side of the goal frame, Miller sent a pass across the goal frame to Spencer, who chipped the ball into the right corner for the equalizer.
Farrell reclaimed the lead for Liberty in the 75th minute. The Langhorne, Pa., native dribbled into the 18-yard box, escaping multiple defenders before lofting the ball over Kirby. Farrell's third goal of the season put the Lady Flames ahead, 2-1.
Following a weather delay stretching approximately 100 minutes, the Lady Flames held the visitors at bay to snap a three-game skid.
Liberty returns to Osborne Stadium on Saturday, squaring off with Presbyterian at 3 p.m. The contest is part of a doubleheader, featuring the Liberty men's soccer team versus UNC Asheville at noon.
