The Liberty women's soccer team picked up its second win in Big South play in an emphatic way, Saturday afternoon at Osborne Stadium. The Lady Flames' attack found the net early and often against Presbyterian, defeating the Blue Hose, 7-1.
With the win, Liberty moves to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in conference action. PC falls to 2-9 on the year and 0-3 in the Big South. The Lady Flames are now 9-1-1 all-time versus the Blue Hose.
Freshman forward Gabrielle Farrell paced the Liberty offense with two goals and two assists, followed by junior forward Jennifer Knoebel with two goals and one assist. Farrell now leads the team with five goals on the year.
Junior forward Isabella Habuda, sophomore midfielder Lauren Weygandt and senior forward Erika Troutman also had markers for Liberty. Freshman defender Elisa Warren and redshirt sophomore midfielder Abigail Persson each chipped in one assist.
Kelsey Yeager posted the lone marker for PC, with the assist coming from Frances Whitesides.
Liberty outshot the Blue Hose, 20-5, and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Holly Van Noord played the opening 45 minutes for Liberty, making one save. Redshirt junior Tori Collar came in for the entire second period. Alysaa Leaman and Cayde Picklesimer also split time in goal for PC. Leman made four saves in the first period, while Picklesimer finished with one in the final stanza.
Liberty wasted little time, lighting up the board in the opening 83 seconds. Knoebel sent the ball up to the left side of the box for Farrell, who beat the keeper with a close range shot for the 1-0 lead.
Farrell decided to spread the wealth in the sixth minute, crossing a pass over to Habuda from the left side. The junior transfer received the ball in front of the goal frame and placed a shot into the right corner, putting Liberty ahead, 2-0.
Farrell was not done distributing, assisting Knoebel on her first goal of the season in the 22nd minute. The freshman passed the ball into the 18-yard box for Knoebel, who tapped it in from close range into the right corner, extending the lead to 3-0.
Liberty capped the period with a fourth goal in the 30th minute. Around midfield, Warren lobbed a through ball up to Farrell, who carried it into the 18-yard box. Farrell then dribbled by the goalkeeper and chipped a shot into an open net, giving Liberty a 4-0 halftime lead.
In the second period, Knoebel added her second goal in the 54th minute. The junior collected the ball outside of the 18-yard box and buried it into the upper right corner to make it 5-0.
Following Yeager's one-touch goal off a Whitesides free kick in the 70th minute, the Lady Flames responded with their sixth goal just over six minutes later. Persson crossed the ball from the left side to Weygandt, who was inside the 18-yard box. Much like Knoebel earlier, Weygandt blasted a shot into the upper right corner to put Liberty up 6-1.
Erika Troutman closed out the scoring on the day in the 86th minute with her first career goal. The senior drilled a shot into left corner from the far side of the 18-yard box, cementing the 7-1 final.
Liberty hits the road on Wednesday, continuing Big South play versus Gardner-Webb. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
