
Lady Flames Sweep Morgan State, 3-0, to Open VCU Invitational

Liberty opened the VCU Invitational with a 3-0 sweep (25-13, 25-17, 25-18) over Morgan State, Friday at the Siegel Center.
The Lady Flames improve to 4-6 on the season with the victory, while the Bears remain in search of their first win of the season at 0-13.
For the match, Liberty outhit Morgan State, .289-.060. The Lady Flames led, 40-28 in kills, 46-33 in digs, 3-2 in blocks and 6-0 in service aces.
Liberty's Casey Goodwin hit .500 for the match, scoring a match-high 13 kills to go with three service aces. Sydney Morris sent down nine kills, while Anna Gragg recorded eight kills and two blocks. Anna Willey dished out a match-high 34 assists, and Margaret Latchford led all players with 13 digs.
Natashia Barker scored 12 kills and added eight digs to pace the Bears, while Haley McClure registered eight kills. Roi Wallace dished out a team-best 21 assists.
With set one tied, 5-5, a Carter kill sparked the Lady Flames to a 5-0 run to take control of the session at 10-5. Overall, the Lady Flames outscored the Bears, 20-8, over the final 28 serves to win 25-13. Liberty served up three aces, while outhitting Morgan State, .346-.000. Morris led all players with four first-set kills.
Morgan State led the second set, 12-11, following a kill by Keana Browne. The Lady Flames scored the next six points, as Payton Carter's kill staked Liberty to a 17-12 advantage. Liberty maintained its sizeable advantage throughout the rest of the set, winning 25-17.
Liberty hit .207 during set two, compared to .056 for the Bears. Barker scored six kills for MSU, to pace all players during the middle session.
During the final session, Liberty pulled away for the sweep, winning set three, 25-18. The Lady Flames outhit the Bears, .314-.103, in the third stanza. Goodwin sent down seven of Liberty's 16 set-three kills, fueling the Lady Flames' attack.
The Lady Flames conclude their time in Richmond tomorrow, taking on Middle Tennessee at 10 a.m. before finishing with a 5 p.m. match against the host VCU Rams.
