Looking for its third straight win in Big South play, the Liberty women's soccer team squared off with Gardner-Webb at Greene Harbison Stadium, Wednesday night. Unfortunately for the Lady Flames, the Runnin' Bulldogs received a goal in the 47th minute from Eline Glamsland and held the Liberty attack at bay for the 1-0 victory.
With the defeat, Liberty falls to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in conference action. Gardner-Webb is now 5-7-2 on the year and 2-1 in the Big South.
The Runnin' Bulldogs outshot the Lady Flames, 15-11, while corner kicks were even at six apiece.
Goalkeeper Holly Van Noord played the entire 90 minutes in goal for Liberty, making seven saves. Garner-Webb netminder Keely Brown finished with three saves in the shutout.
Liberty held a slight 7-6 edge in shots during the first period. However, the Runnin' Bulldogs had more opportunities on goal, forcing Van Noord to make four stops in the stanza. Liberty's two best chances occurred in the 12th and 39th minute thanks to shots from junior midfielder Baylee Gillmore and junior forward Isabella Habuda. Brown thwarted both attempts, keeping the contest scoreless at halftime.
The Runnin' Bulldogs wasted little time in the second frame, lighting up the board 63 seconds into the period. The unassisted goal by Glamsland gave the home team a 1-0 advantage.
Gardner-Webb continued to apply pressure with two more shots on goal in the 49th minute, both of which were corralled by Van Noord.
Sophomore defender Emma Pirro tried to give Liberty the equalizer in the 68th minute, belting a shot at the Gardner-Webb net. Brown prevented the Lady Flames from scoring with her third and final save. Just 74 seconds later, Van Noord recorded her seventh save of the contest, stopping a shot from Sydney David.
Liberty's last chance at knotting the contest came in the 86th minute. Sophomore forward Devon Jones attempted to garner her third goal of the year with a header, but the shot sailed high, setting up the 1-0 final.
Due to the National Weather Service's forecasted path of Hurricane Matthew through the Charleston, S.C., area, Liberty's game against Charleston Southern scheduled for Saturday has been postponed. The Lady Flames will return to Osborne Stadium on Oct. 12 to host Winthrop at 4 p.m. The match will stream live on the Liberty Flames Sports Network and the Big South Network.
