The Liberty women's soccer team appeared to be on its way to a draw with Radford, Wednesday night, but a golden goal by Devon Jones erased the potential tie, giving the Lady Flames a 3-2 victory at Patrick D. Cupp Stadium.
With 20 seconds left in double overtime, sophomore forward Jennifer Knoebel headed the ball forward to Jones from the top of the box. The freshman capitalized on an open goal opportunity, scoring her second marker of the night and propelling Liberty to a conference opening win.
Liberty is now 3-5-1 on the season and 1-0 in Big South action, while Radford moves to 5-4 and 0-1 in conference play.
Appearing in her third game this season, Jones led the Lady Flames with two goals. Entering the contest needing one point to take sole possession of second place on Liberty's all-time career points list, senior midfielder Brittany Aanderud netted a goal while also assisting on Jones' first marker. Aanderud now has 58 career points, sitting only behind Nancy (Davis) White (1998-2001), who closed out her Liberty career with 106 points.
In addition to Aanderud, Knoebel and freshman midfielder Alyssa Hill each earned assists.
Radford's McKensey Ziegler and Jasmine Casarez accounted for Radford's pair of goals. Casarez also garnered an assist, along with Shannon Nasca and Jordan Lundin.
Liberty goalkeeper and Big South saves leader Holly Van Noord played the entire 109:40, finishing with six saves. Radford netminder Katie McCormick closed out the evening with seven stops.
Liberty outshot the Highlanders, 27-19, and held a 10-4 advantage on corner kicks.
Jones began the night much like she ended it, scoring her first career goal in the 39th minute. Aanderud kick started the play, chipping a ball to Hill on the right side. Hill then sent a pass toward the post, setting up a one-touch goal for Jones. The freshman's marker gave Liberty a 1-0 advantage.
Aanderud added to Jones' goal four minutes later with her third goal of the season. Following a foul in the box, Aanderud drilled a penalty kick into the net to put the Lady Flames up 2-0 at halftime.
The Highlanders responded in the second period with their first goal in the 67th minute. Nasca crossed a pass from the right side to the middle of the box, where Casarez deflected the ball to Ziegler. The sophomore forward finished the play to make it a 2-1 game.
Radford's equalizing goal occurred in the 81st minute. A scramble ensued following a corner kick from Lundin, allowing Casarez to pick up the loose ball and punch it into the right corner. Casarez's game-tying marker ultimately sent the contest into overtime knotted at 2-2.
Radford continued to ride the momentum of the equalizer, outshooting Liberty in the first overtime, 6-0. The Lady Flames flipped the script in the second extra period, posting seven unanswered shot attempts and sealing the contest with Jones' golden goal, 3-2.
Liberty returns to Osborne Stadium on Saturday to host Charleston Southern at 4 p.m. The contest is part of a doubleheader with the men's team playing Winthrop at noon. The Lady Flames' clash with the Buccaneers will be streamed live on the Liberty Flames Sports Network and the Big South Network.
