The Liberty women's soccer team picked up its second straight Big South victory, Saturday afternoon, defeating Charleston Southern, 2-0, at Osborne Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, Liberty found its rhythm, receiving goals from Crystal Elmers and Jennifer Knoebel. Knoebel also earned an assist on the goal by Elmers, earning a helper in her second consecutive game.
With the victory, Liberty moves to 4-5-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while the Buccaneers fall to 2-4-2 and 0-2 in Big South action. The Lady Flames have now won three straight contests against the Buccaneers. Liberty is undefeated through the first two games of conference play for the fifth consecutive contest.
Liberty goalkeeper Holly Van Noord earned her fourth shutout of the season and 27th of her career, finishing with six saves. Charleston Southern's Alyssa Dellacqua also played the full match in between the posts, garnering 15 saves.
The Lady Flames outshot the Buccaneers, 25-7, and held a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Liberty dominated the attack in the first half, but could not solve the goalkeeping prowess of Dellacqua. Despite the Lady Flames outshooting the Buccaneers, 15-1, including nine shots on goal, Dellacqua made several impressive saves to keep Liberty at bay. Thanks in part to her efforts, the score remained tied, 0-0, at halftime.
In the second half, the Lady Flames cracked the code, garnering its first goal in the 71st minute. Knoebel kick started the play, sending the ball inside the box from the right side. Posted up in front of the goal frame, Elmers received the pass with her left foot and flicked the ball off her right heel into the back of the net. Elmers first goal of the season gave Liberty the 1-0 lead.
The Lady Flames sealed the contest with an insurance goal exactly five minutes later. Breaking through two Buccaneer defenders, Knoebel tapped a ball from inside the box past Dellacqua. The sophomore's second goal on the year set up the 2-0 final.
Liberty continues play at Osborne Stadium, playing host to Campbell, Wednesday at 3 p.m. The contest will stream live on the Liberty Flames Sports Network and the Big South Network.
