
George Washington Moves Past Liberty, 3-0

Looking to build upon a 1-0 golden goal victory over VCU, the Liberty women's soccer team traveled to the nation's capital, Thursday afternoon, for a matchup with George Washington. Unfortunately for the Lady Flames, the Colonials benefited from an own goal, a penalty kick and a third marker in the second period to take the contest,
With the defeat at GW Soccer Field, Liberty ends its non-conference slate at 2-5-1. The Colonials improve to 3-4-1 in 2015. George Washington's victory also ties the all-time series at 2-2.
Defender Brooke Stoller and midfielder Kristi Abbate each contributed goals during the contest for George Washington.
Liberty goalkeeper Holly Van Noord played the entire 90 minutes, finishing with three saves. Miranda Horn spent the opening 61 minutes in between the posts for the Colonials, making three saves. Ellen Conway relieved Horn during the final 29 minutes, garnering one save.
Despite the defeat, the Lady Flames outshot George Washington, 10-7, with the Colonials holding an 11-5 advantage on corner kicks.
George Washington's first marker occurred in the 20th minute when a ball deflected off a Liberty player following a Stoller corner kick, resulting in an own goal.
The Colonials followed up with a second goal on a penalty kick just before the 33rd minute following a foul inside the box, Stoller connected on the penalty kick attempt, extending the home team's lead to 2-0.
George Washington wasted little time in the second period, rounding out its scoring in the 48th minute. Dribbling to the center of the 18-yard box from the right side, Abbate booted a ball into the upper right corner of the net, setting up the 3-0 final.
Liberty will receive a six-day break from game action, before heading to Radford to begin conference play on Sept. 23. Game time at Patrick D. Cupp Stadium is slated for 7 p.m.
