
Lady Flames Fall in Tight, 5-Set Home Finale to Campbell

Campbell rallied from a 12-9, fifth set deficit to earn 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 14-25, 15-13) win at Liberty, Saturday at the Vines Center.
The Camels improve to 11-15, 5-7 in Big South play, winning a five-set match after falling in five at Radford last night. The Lady Flames (13-12, 8-4), who had beaten Campbell, 3-2, Oct. 9, finished out their home schedule with an 8-3 mark. Campbell picked up its first win in six matches all-time at the Vines Center.
Liberty collected a season-high 114 digs, compared to 90 for the Camels. The Lady Flames' 114 digs were the third most in the program's rally-scoring history and most under the current 25-point scoring system. The hosts outhit their visitors, .188-.124, while Campbell led, 11-9 in blocks and 7-2 in service aces.
Katelyn Layden recorded 15 kills, three aces and 14 digs for Campbell, while Jenny Tait and Jessica Stocking registered 10 kills each. Mary Crema collected a match-high 33 digs, while McKenzie Fell contributed eight kills and eight blocks. Rebecca Ramirez and Summer Schuitema dished out 22 digs apiece.
Jade Vorster sent down a match-high 16 kills, while Caroline Douglas followed with 15 kills. Anna Willey registered her 11th double-double this year, with 53 assists and 19 digs. Margaret Latchford led five Lady Flames in double-figures in digs, with 27. Sirena Vorster recorded 10 kills and five blocks. Hanna Weidner registered nine kills, while Haley Jeffcoat chipped in eight kills and 13 digs. Allie Reynolds collected a season-high 17 digs, while Michelle Melendez corralled 15 digs.
Campbell led set one, 21-17, after a block. Gabrielle Vess and Jade Vorster both scored kills during a 4-0 surge as Liberty tied it at 21-all. The Camels scored the next two points, and Stocking gave the visitors a 25-23 victory with a kill.
The Camels outhit Liberty, .109-.083 during set one, posting five blocks. Stocking led all players with six kills.
The Lady Flames turned the tables in the second session, racing out to a 21-15 lead. After Campbell trimmed the deficit to 21-18, Vorster scored three late kills, helping Liberty tie the match with a 25-20 set-two win.
Jade Vorster scored six kills for Liberty in the second stanza, as the Lady Flames outhit the Camels, .128-.000.
Set three featured 16 ties and seven lead changes. Campbell took a 19-17 lead after back-to-back kills by Rachel Harty and Madison Linxwiler. Douglas scored on Campbell's next two serves, and Liberty tied it, 21-21, on a Weidner-Sirena Vorster block. Layden then posted two kills and a block, as Campbell took the 25-21 victory.
Campbell held a slight, .163-.150 edge in hitting percentage, as Layden scored six kills.
Liberty raced out to a 19-10 lead, sending the match to a decisive fifth set with a 25-14 set-four win. The Lady Flames outhit Campbell, .314-.043 in the fourth session.
The Lady Flames opened up a 12-9 lead in the final set, after two kills by Douglas and one from Willey during a 3-1 run. Layden and Fell both scored kills, and a Ramirez ace knotted the set at 12-all. After a Weidner kills gave Liberty a 13-12 advantage, Campbell scored three straight kills to win the decisive set, 15-13.
Campbell hit .414 in the final session, compared to .333 for Liberty, as the teams combined for just one attack error.
The Lady Flames return to the road for their final two regular-season matches, next weekend. Liberty will play at UNC Asheville, Friday at 7 p.m., before closing out the regular season with a 4:30 p.m. contest at Gardner-Webb, Saturday.
