Liberty's Comeback Falls Short Against ODU

The Liberty Lady Flames field hockey team saw its comeback fall short on Sunday afternoon, in a 2-1 loss to the No. 9 Old Dominion Lady Monarchs at Liberty Field Hockey Field.
With the loss, Liberty falls to 1-3 on the season while ODU improves to 1-3.
The Lady Monarchs applied the early pressure in the contest with the first four shots of the game. In the ninth minute of the contest, ODU capitalized on its first penalty corner of the game as Victoria Rezette found the back of the cage for her first goal of the 2014 campaign.
ODU added its second goal just 12 minutes later as Katy Fuhrman flicked the ball inside the right corner for her third goal of the season.
The Lady Flames added their own goal four minutes later when freshman Alynn Richardson stepped up in a major way. The Lady Monarchs were on the attacking end of a penalty corner, but the defensive unit of
Liberty quickly countered the possession and zipped the ball to Ashlee Krulock running up the middle. Krulock put the shot on frame, when Richardson stood in front of the goal to flick the ball high under the cross bar for her first goal in a Liberty uniform.
The Lady Flames had a few more chances to tie the contest, none moreso than a second-half penalty stroke attempt by senior Helen Doolittle. Doolittle's shot beat the goalie to the left side. However, the ball clipped the wrong side of the post and would not budge into the goal.
Following a timeout with 3:23 left in the contest, the Lady Flames pulled junior goalkeeper Mallory Cuccio, opting for a kicking back and giving Liberty the man up advantage. However, the Lady Monarchs were able to deny any chance of an equalizer before the final horn.
ODU outshot Liberty, 13-9, but the Lady Flames held the advantage in shots on goal 7-4.
Liberty will hit the road Friday when the Lady Flames square off against the Lafayette Leopards at 7 p.m. in Easton, Pa. Liberty will turn around to play at Penn two days later for a Sunday contest starting at 11 a.m.
