The Liberty Lady Flames field hockey team fell short on Friday evening in a 4-2 loss to the Lafayette Leopards at Rappolt Field.
With the loss, Liberty falls to 1-4 on the season, while Lafayette improves to 4-1.
Liberty quickly jumped on the scoreboard when Sarah Gipe converted on the first short corner of the contest just eight minutes into the game.
After drawing the foul, Ashlee Krulock set up the play for the Lady Flames with Bethany Barr waiting to receive the ball at the top of the circle. Barr settled the ball, allowing Gipe to swing in and rip the shot on goal. The shot deflected off a Lafayette stick into the right corner, resulting in a 1-0 lead for the Lady Flames.
However, the lead would not hold as the Leopards connected on their first corner of the game during the 20th minute of competition. Lafayette's Kelsey Mead picked the ball out of the air and was able to find the back of the cage to tie the game at one.
The Leopards connected on another short corner just five minutes later when Jenna Seybert flicked the ball into the right corner of the goal for the 2-1 lead, an advantage that would stand and allow the home team to take the one-goal lead into halftime.
The Lady Flames answered to start the second half when Barr drew a foul and quickly placed the ball down to resume play. Barr weaved through the defense and zipped the ball towards the frame, beating the goalie on the left side to tie the match at two apiece.
The score remained knotted at two until the 58th minute of play when Lafayette's Ellen Colbourne dribbled the ball from the fifty yard line to the circle, sending the ball past Mallory Cuccio for the 3-2 lead.
The Leopards sealed its fourth victory in five matches this season during the 64th minute when they were granted a penalty stroke. Hannah Millen sent the stroke into the bottom right side of the goal, for the 4-2 lead.
The two-goal edge held until the final buzzer as the Lady Flames were unable to find the back of the cage during the closing minutes.
Liberty outshot the Leopards 15-8, including a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.
The Lady Flames continue their Pennsylvania road trip on Sunday when they square off against the Penn Quakers at 11 a.m., at Ellen Vagelos Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
